If you haven’t read it yet, the course design story in this month’s USHJA In Stride magazine is incredibly thorough and well-done. It breaks down a Grand Prix track at Thermal from start to finish, including talking to the winning rider. If you’ve ever wondered exactly why course designers are using particular jumps or why you almost never see two-strides in jump-offs, it touches on all of those things. Fun read, highly recommend!
I’ll never even jump a crossrail again, but that was really fun and educational! I feel like I’ll be a more informed spectator at least.
I looked for a video of the whole thing, but this is all that came up.
I love things like this! I will never jump this big, but our local rated show did a “walk with the course designer” last month, and I attended, and learned so much just from that 20-30 minutes, even after riding hunters for a long time.
I am big on thinking about “what questions is this course asking me, and how can/will my horse/me as a rider answer them well?” and this just felt right up my alley. Thanks for posting this one! I may not have seen it otherwise.
