cowboy boots upper too loose around calves

Ok silly question, but its basically the reason i joined here and because i just couldn’t find anywhere better to ask. Bought a pair of cowboy boots a couple weeks ago. On the foot they fit perfect, but the uppers are so loose around my calves that when i walk they slap the back of my leg making noise which is almost louder than the clunk of the heel. Im not sure what to do about it, but it’s kind of embarrassing putting out this odd wap wap noise as i walk. Has anyone else ever had this problem?

thanks

What brand? Are they fashion boots or working? High or low? Like all other clothing cut, fit and material varies as does price and for good reason.

Thier dan post mens TKO boots. I believe thier a 13in upper.

I would guess that a bootmaker could probably modify an upper. It would likely adversely affect the appearance of the upper but if you wear your pants over the upper (vice tucking them into it) then it would be a “no harm, no foul.”

Cost might be an issue, though. If these are high dollar boots the maybe a mod makes sense. If they are bargain shelf specials then it might cost more to fix than the boots themselves, or even a different pair.

Getting boots in CT is never really going to end up as a bargain shelf special, but i wouldnt say they were super expensive either. Got them for 170 on sale, but yeah im probably looking at 100 easy to have them “adjusted”. Theres not a whole lot of places to buy boots around here where i can try on various pairs for fit. I’d probably be lucky to find a place that had 2 kinds to even try on. Gotta try something though as the noise seems to be getting worse the more they get worn in.

I feel you pain on this!

If you like the boots otherwise then maybe $100 is not too much.

Or just tuck your jeans into the boots! That should take up quite a bit of room.

That’s really only half a joke. A lot of western riders wear their boots that way. But while OK at the barn you might get some “looks” at the mall!

What kind of socks are you wearing? Perhaps taller heavy worksocks would take up some space.

Did you try on before buying?

I have so much the opposite problem bundling muscular calves into tall boots

Maybe you could even get the tops of thick socks or even leg warmers and temporarily attach to the inside of the shafts.

I got the boots from zappos so i couldnt try on before buying. I really like them and the foot fits so well that i’d rather figure out a solution then return them. Maybe ill just stuff a sock in them or sew in an extra peice of leather or something.

And oh yeah, pretty sure im not going the pants in boot route lol.

Try wearing knee socks. It should prevent the noise, along with protecting your leg from rubbing. Soccer socks are nice inside boots with high tops along with other athletic type socks. I would not go with the thin socks used with English boots. Wish I had less muscular calves!

Agree with NOT tucking jeans into boots. Unless you were Roy Rogers or a true Buckeroo with all their skills, you wear jeans outside the boot shaft. Tucked in jeans will label you, not in a good way if you can’t back it up with the skills.

You mean like the guy here who thinks he’s a cowboy and wears his spurs to the grocery store

Hey, what’s wrong with wearing your spurs to the store? Been there done that.

I have the opposite problem, finding a nice western boot for an 18-19 inch calf. And I hate the look of the fat baby boots.
Looking for a work boot, nothing fancy.

Of the maybe 20 pairs of boots i have owned in my life, I’ve only had one pair (also bought online as a gift for me but I had picked them out) that were too big in the calf. I couldn’t handle it and resold them locally. Hated that leather slapping the back of my leg and didn’t like the silhouette, either.

Thanks everyone. Not sure what im going to do yet. I think ill see what the cobbler says.

Hey, I wear my boots outside all the time if I’m wearing skinny jeans, they’re too pretty to cover up . I have Justin Gypsys with turquoise uppers.

But zappos makes returning sooo easy! Free shipping and free returns. I don’t keep anything I order from zappos that isn’t a perfect fit. Just keep trying different styles until you find one that’s perfect.
