Coyote Vest!

This was just featured on CBS Morning show.

One of our boarders uses that exact one on her small dog. The dry weather has brought ground squirrels into the big pasture, and he cannot resist chasing them. The coyotes frequently cross that pasture so it’s a very good idea. I thought at least someone would freak out but the horses all utterly ignore it.

My mini rat terrier apparently got into it with a fox last winter while wearing his nice warm puffer style vest. He came home vestless smelling like fox, and I later found his vest, still velcroed shut but with a large tear through the arm hole wear he shimmied out of it in the bottom of our pasture. It was soaked in fox stink. At that point I did consider buying him a coyote vest but he has demonstrated increased wisdom about not trying to steal prey from foxes and not straying too far from the big dogs when the scent of fox or coyote is in the air. Strangely, the fox no longer hangs out in our pasture either!

That’s a pretty cool invention! I’m from California and know people who have lost dogs and cats to Coyotes. I know we have them out here (there was even one years back hiding under a car in Tribeca!), but have never seen one even at the farm, or heard similar stories on this coast. Makes a lot of sense if you’re in an area populated with a lot of ‘em. (Even if they do look a bit silly!)

Thanks for sharing!

My mother has a small dog in coyote country and I sent her the link to the sellers. She has already ordered a vest! Hopefully it will never be needed but it will be good to know that Jazz has some protection, if necessary.

I’d consider one for my tiny dog for protection from hawks and eagles. I’m in a condo development next to farmland and they are often seen flying about. My neighbor’s chihuahua was nearly snatched by a hawk while on the end of a retractable leash. While walking my chi mix in a housing development a hawk flew low right past us; I really didn’t think he’d be hunting with the houses and trees around.

I saw this couple on Shark Tank. They were basically laughed off the show.

We have one for our dog. It’s important to understand that they emphasize that the vest is intended to give you time to intervene, they are not coyote proof.

I saw this when the sellers were on Shark Tank, and I thought it was a great idea.

I suspect a lot of coyotes, are actually interbred with domestic dogs, because the one’s I’ve seen in the past few years are a lot bigger than coyotes.

So I sent the link to my mother yesterday and she ordered a vest.

Then my cousin called my mother to say that when she was driving past mom’s house, a wolf ran across the road from mom’s house, then through her parking area on the other side of the road.

Not even kidding.

Mom said that her dog had been barking from the deck but she didn’t see what Jazz was barking at. Apparently, it was the wolf in the yard.

So, does anyone make wolf vests?

Yes, we have coyotes and coy-dogs all over here.
One I saw at the farm I mistook for the BMs German shepherd

I think my little 11-pounder is getting a Coyote Vest as soon as I can decide on the choices and options (so many choices!). Lots of positive reviews and many testimonials.

Having had a similar size dog attacked by a much larger dog (lost an eye, plus suffered puncture wounds around the neck), I’m most worried about that scenario possibly repeating itself. Such as during a walk or when we take her places --it’s one of the reasons we’ve kept her in a stroller at the Farmer’s Market for example, as there are always other dogs, the vast majority of which are several times her size.
