Craigslist Horse? [UPDATE - Welcome to the Family, Kalcifer! #98]

Nope. A glamorous $1k of winnings in 7 starts

Either you are really downplaying this horse’s reactions or your vet has really high standards. He still sounds like a very reasonable horse to handle so much change so well

I’m being quite honest as to how the horse has acted. No need to sugar coat it to you guys, because I was looking for you honest opinions. He acts like a bona fide 3 year old. He wants to look around at everything, he’s a little big of a wiggle worm, has some ADHD, he’s still figuring out cross ties, he’s figuring out “human must have personal space”. He has some herd bound behavior that I FEEL like is getting better slowly.

Vet only gets to see a snapshot of about 5 minutes. While I have seen the snapshot of about 3-4 days now.

This is so cool!

Reminds me very much of how I purchased my guy, except he was a 2 year old TB and I bought him straight from his breeder/trainer. They tried to train him at Delaware park and decided against racing him (seriously the world’s laziest TB). I drove a few hours away, looked at him trot in hand (no riding, no canter), and brought him home. No sense in spending $$$ on a huge vet check when it would cost more than his purchase price.

Glad to see Kalcifer got a nice upgrade. Also LOVE his name. That’s actually what brought me to this thread today  I’m a huge Ghibli-nerd (Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro are my tied-favorites). Good luck with him! I’ll be checking back for updates

Why not? I’d go check him out if you have the room and can afford having another horse. Looking doesn’t cost anything.

Bingo. When X-rays cost 3x his purchase price, it’s a risk I will gamble. Let’s hope it doesn’t bite me in the butt. How did your “rehabbing” of your TB go into the hunter/jumper lifestyle?

Glad someone caught onto his name  Calcifer in the Studio Ghibli movie reminded me JUST of this horse. But I am trashy like the Kardashians because all my horses have “K” names (started off on accident – now it’s a tradition), so I switched out the C for K. I love Studio Ghibli, too!

As for behavior, he might be like my guy and sensitive to rich food. My horse can’t eat alfalfa nor any concentrated feed, even low-starch and alfalfa-free.

Just something you might want to explore. He’s gorgeous, by the way.

Congratulations on your cutie.

I got really, really, REALLY (no, seriously), lucky with my horse. I feel like it could have gone SO wrong. He’s a 2009 TB JC name “Rinka Dinka Doo”. Like you, I had no idea what I was bringing home, other than what the breeder and trainer told me, so I was just taking their word for it. That was August 2011.

Here’s the video that was his “pre-purchase” exam lol…

Fast forward to 2014. He just turned 5, we just started doing the 2’6" Greens. I really can’t say enough good things about this horse. He is THE laziest, most well mannered horse I’ve ever sat on. He’s my little soul-mate horse, and we do everything together from Hunters, he’s been XC schooling, and we’ve done some extensive trail riding.

Here he is last weekend:

He’s a little on the thin side right now, stupid feed store hasn’t been getting in his alflafa pellets. He’s never really been a hard keeper, but I’ve just kept him so active this summer that I’ve had to bump his feed up. I think I’m going to start him on beet bulp if they don’t get the pellets in this week.

So my take away from my whole experience…

Next time I will NOT buy so young. I’d have preferred to buy a 9 year old than a 2 year old. At 2, I thought he was going to grow a lot more than he did. He’s only 5 so there’s a slight (very very slight) chance that he could grow a little more, but for now I have a 15.3 extremely downhill horse. At least at 9, what you’re looking at is what you’ve got.

I don’t regret not doing a PPE. At all. Not when you are bargain hunting!

Your guy is SUPER cute. From the photos, it looks like he’s got a really cute trot. Don’t stress about his behavior now. The first few days my boy was a total crazy butthead. Now he is kick-along quiet and I would trust a dead beginner on him. Fingers crossed your buy will turn into something special. It’s so gratifying to take on a project  I’m looking forward to more photos and videos!

My craigslist horse had never been ridden, so I had no idea what she would feel like under saddle. This is coming from someone who currently has a gaited horse.

No PPE either. I lunged her, watched her movement, flex tested her myself, and took a shot.

Rode her trot for the first time this month and LOVE It. She’s almost as smooth as my gaited boy. Her canter is coming soon.

Your new boy is stunning, I’m so happy for both of you.

Totally agree - I am surprised that the vet would make that proclamation based on 5 minutes, particularly under the circumstances. Based on what you described, it sounds like this horse is dealing remarkably well with all of the change and new things being asked of him. Good luck with him, he’s very cute!

He’s lovely, lucky boy fell on his feet I think

(Also ducked into the thread after seeing his new name. One of my favourite books that (don’t like the film though) and I had to see if you’d named him after that character

I know this is OT, but what is his name now? I love that JC name and the Jimmy Durante reference.

I like him!

Barn name is Jinx. I show him under “This Charming Man” (like the song by the smiths). I just couldn’t do the JC name…

Ooh! Forgot to add we found out his Tattoo number.

I16627 is his Tattoo number. That means he is definitely a 2005 model. His real name is “Winbridle”.

Here’s his auction results:

Don’t know about the rest, but Practicante, on his dam’s side, was the best racehorse in Argentina of his time (and probably up there in all history of argentine JC).

LOL

I’m really looking forward to updates over time, he’s beautiful! Good job!

Very pretty horse, good luck! FWIW, most vets think my horse is a wing nut because she gets really anxious about needles and strangers doing invasive things. On a normal day to day basis, she is quite well behaved and easy to deal with. I am sure you’ll be able to overcome his manners with consistency.

Fantastic! You will have to keep us posted on his progress, he’s a COTH baby now.
