Give me reasons as to why this horse is a bad idea and I should not go look at this this “quarter of mile horse”. While browsing through the CL ads usually for giggles, I saw this one and something about him hit a sore spot… he looks like my late horse Flynn who passed away from EPM.
What do you want to do with him? In your area? Do you have space if he isn’t the right match? After getting burned horse searching I am probably the best person to talk you out of a horse purchase right now .
I’m an enabler so go see him!
The ad gives no details of age or English or western. He’s a bit thin. Looks strong though and quiet but what choice does he have in a tin box stall though the ad describes him as calm and good for kid. Go look or call and find out more about him.
One of the nicest horses I have owned I found on Craigslist - a branded, young WB mare that I got for a song. She is now carting kids around the hunter and eq rings while doing the bigger stuff in the jumper arena with her new owner. Received tons of praise from high level dressage trainers. Was sweet as can be and one of the prettiest horses I’ve seen, and also one of the easiest and most fun.
Go take a look, you never know what you might find.
My horse is a CL reject! His desperate owner put him on CL, then a trainer took him off ad and bought him to our barn to find a home. His owner really was ill and in dire straits. I got horse for $800 inducing blanket and a month free board for taking him off trainer’s hands ( she thought he would make a good lesson horse, not, )
I bet he’s calm, in that shape.
Seriously, if you can afford another-- he looks like a cute enough sort and worth a chance.
Is he IN A TRAILER in that photo?! Can he even lift his head to a normal height without hitting his head?! Sheesh!!
It looks like just a metal stall with dirt.
I will say this for a # of CL horses, if they are tough enough and calm enough to survive and thrive in the less ideal situations shown, they sure will shine when well cared for and have good possibility of being hardy as well.
He’s got really upright pasterns. Fine for a once-in-a-while trail horse, not okay over fences.
I bought my Craigslist horse just over 4 years ago. Horse was in New Mexico and I was in Virginia. Paid $800 for him, plus $1,000 shipping. Does he have share of flaws? Yup. He’s slightly downhill, long-backed, and he’s too straight behind. BUT, he’s a cute mover and he has a phenomenal temperament and THAT is what matters most to me. Plus, he loves having a job. Jumping is his favorite thing in the world, but he likes dressage, too, and our dressage trainer loves him. I felt, and still do feel, as though I got the bargain of a lifetime.
Two years later: https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc3/t1.0-9/405142_4390451833645_2137299361_n.jpg
If there is something that draws you to him, it can’t hurt to go look. And if you have the extra space and money, it certainly couldn’t hurt to give him an upgrade.
Love the buckskin! I’ll post photo of my CL guy later, supposed to be working lol.

Thank you! I’m supposed to be working, too, but since it’s a half day before a major holiday, there’s not much happening. I look forward to the photo!

Oh, my…what a cutie and a GREAT find! How old is he?
And PS, I have serious forelock envy. My horse’s forelock is so sad and pathetic.
He is around 16 now (or 17, not sure of exact birth date). When I got him he was around 13. He is part mustang part arab, both tend to be hardy and long age breeds…he’s a fun guy, a character (lived out in a field unridden entire life, typical CL background, either in a tiny tin stall or a field)
Say what you will about craigslist horses being hillbilly central, but the worst horse I ever went to look at was a lovely photo ad on dreamhorse. I arrived to find an emaciated pony in a small barbed wire dry lot. Beyond the barbed wire were a half dozen wolves on chains. Ok, ok, they were hybrid wolves, which the seller bred and sold, and apparently fed, since they all looked fine. Seller joked that the pony would occasionally jump the fence to eat the dog food. I was pretty sure those wolves were going to eat him, so he had to come home with me. That was 13 years ago, he now happily carts kids around in wt lessons. But he had a lovely photo ad haha dude, wolves.
Aww, thanks for taking the pony home! I agree, horses can be poorly kept in all kinds of situations. CL gets stereotyped a bit which is not fair.
picture of pony please?
I’ll see what I can dig up. :).
I swore to myself recently that the next horse I buy is not going to have a sob story haha but I love broken things!

I am not sure what I want to do with him. I’m dabble in dressage but do hunters and jumpers mostly. I’ve been browsing (looking is even too serious of a word) for a project horse to bring along slowly. I just want something to jump small on (up to 3’) and have fun on. I have my big heart horse that can do all the bigger jumps, so I don’t need a horse for that. I just want another one to love, have fun on, maybe take to shows and do some low level jumping.
We have plenty of space at my trainer’s barn with lots of grass for him to get fat on. So space isn’t a problem.

Most likely western. I’m in Texas and he’s in a kind of … “ghetto” part of town. There’s a lot of “urban cowboys” in Houston in these parts of town. He’s thin. This is what stroke a chord with me. My first horse, Flynn, looked just like this when we got him. He also looked like this when he died of EPM because he couldn’t eat (ugh… )
I feel sad for his tin box stall. Knowing this area, he’s probably in someones dirt back yard, doesn’t have grass to eat or ways to run and stretch his legs.

I’m starting to feel like I should go look at him. And perhaps bring a couple of guys with me just in case though.

HAHAHA, when I read the advert, I thought this exact thing. Yeah, he’s calm because he probably doesn’t have loads of energy to burn.
He’s cute, I swore off chestnuts, but this one i’m hard to admitting I kind of like the guy.

OMG that made me LOL! That is just so red-neck crazy
I love hearing these success stories.
