Craigslist Horse? [UPDATE - Welcome to the Family, Kalcifer! #98]
I bought my Craigslist horse just over 4 years ago. Horse was in New Mexico and I was in Virginia. Paid $800 for him, plus $1,000 shipping. Does he have share of flaws? Yup. He’s slightly downhill, long-backed, and he’s too straight behind. BUT, he’s a cute mover and he has a phenomenal temperament and THAT is what matters most to me. Plus, he loves having a job. Jumping is his favorite thing in the world, but he likes dressage, too, and our dressage trainer loves him. I felt, and still do feel, as though I got the bargain of a lifetime.

If there is something that draws you to him, it can’t hurt to go look. And if you have the extra space and money, it certainly couldn’t hurt to give him an upgrade.
What a lovely outcome! I guess you’re right. It can’t hurt to go look.

Funny, same here. My trainer convinced me to drive an hour to come look at this horse that looked “gorgeous” in the pictures on the advert on dreamhorse. I got there and wow. Skin and bones. Didn’t even feel comfortable cantering her because she just seemed so tense.

But HAHAHA @ hybrid wolves. Wow. I would have cringed when she said pony jumps the fence to eat DOG FOOD. Hello lady, wake up. Glad you upgraded him in life

Craigslist Horse

I found the absolute sweetest pony on Craigslist. He has the best personality and will do anything for my daughter. I got him for next to nothing. Check out BamBam- http://cestlaviefarm.weebly.com/clv-smallmedium-ponies.html
He truly was a diamond in the rough.

He looks more than just a bit thin. :frowning: But from what is visible in the picture, it looks like his feet have been kept up, quite downhill, he’s rubbing his tail and I think you should go get him.

Is he eating out of a dutch oven?

My CL horse didn’t even have a photo on her ad, but here are the before and after shots. http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc480/unionjack044/Horses/Lucy/lucybeforeafter.jpg

She had a whole host of issues but I was sure glad to fatten her up.

She livened up considerably once she was feeling better, so just beware that the horse you see may not be the horse you end up with.

I can’t even believe that is the same horse, holy #$%*!

Alright. I sent off an email and asked for more pictures and, if they are able, to send a couple video clips.

WAY WAY WAY overpriced. That horse should be under $500 in his shape and with the dropped back I’m going to assume that he’s in his late teens.

Starhouse, the change is amazing! lovely horse a gem.

Go see him. He is in desparate need of an upgrade! Hopefully you love him and can give him a soft place to land. Yes, I am an enabler.

Thank you! I figured as much

He does need an upgrade. Shoot, even if it was just a big, super green pasture with a run in shed (that is big enough for him), that’d be an upgrade. A treats. Lots of treats.

Never underestimate the craigslist horses. Good deals can be found if you know what to look for.

Mine was a husband trail horse:

Who turned into a 3’ packer in a year and a half:

I would get another one off craigslist in a second if I were looking and found the right match.

Kate, it seems impossible that a horse as cute as yours could ever take a bad picture. But those before ones!!! Oy!!!

Haha! He was a bit… rough. And those were the “before” pictures that I deemed worthy of keeping!

Here he is with his lease kid for the year, doing the pre-childrens:

Don’t know if there is anything cuter than that sweet boy!

see u at x…I don’t think I’d have been able to resist that beautiful buckskin either! Lovely!

CLV, that pony is beautiful and rider looks very happy in photo.

OP, he is worth a go see. I got my son’s QH (ha, quarter of a mile) off CL, and she is a star. He won everything in 4H with her including state, and I took her on a 10 mile judged pleasure trail ride for the first time ever a few weeks ago and she won two divisions. Some unsolicited advice - XRAY THE FRONT FEET.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! OP if you get this horse, be sure to take lots of “before” photos so you can admire the fruits of your labour after he’s all nice and fat and shiny!

My horse flunked out at the track. He was seven and was raced by his owner/breeder. The guy couldn’t keep him unless he was earning his keep, so I got him through a CL ad that a friend of a friend checked out. There was no arena, no place to ride him, but he had a huge overstride, so I bought him as a “rescue.”

He rescued me.

He’s a hunter now, too, but this is him under a dressage trainer about a year after I got him.
