Cranbury Sale Stable auction horse - anyone know this mare?
I have been to this auction and know the owners. It is “higher end” as auctions go, better than New Holland, but an auction all the same, it seems with some sketchy business going on from what I’ve seen/heard/seen on social media and know of. Where are the videos of the mare from 2013? I only found one from VT in 2010. I too wondered how a horse like this could end up at an auction. Sad

As for the holsteiner gelding, I know that horse and have seen it go many times as it is from the area. Let’s just say I know why it’s going through the auction, and I’m quite concerned about how it many turn out for both the horse and whomever the buyer ends up being. Shame
Ugh, this kind of thing gives me a knot in my stomach :frowning:

Praying both these horses have a soft landing… I think the auction starts at 2 today.

The Cranberry auction super shady. They go to New Holland, buy up a bunch of super cheap horses and ponies for their “rescue” program, mark them up 10x what they paid for them, and if they don’t sell send them back to NH.

Horses have routinely been delivered to their new owners having lost massive amounts of weight, with pneumonia so bad there is no choice but for them to be put down, sometimes a decade or more older than advertised, not broke and/or dangerous when advertised as “rides/drives the best.” In one case, a super nice pony just dropped dead from some kind of intestinal infection/colitis/peritonitis several weeks after it arrived - and very likely not from anything the horse was exposed to after leaving (new owners are meticulous with their care).

It’s an auction, buyer beware and all that, but you know, have some ethics, people.

Any updates?

Anyone know what the Silvita mare and the bay Holsteiner gelding went for?

Without sounding naive is it possible her prior owner does not know this mare ended up at an auction?

I sent her a message through Facebook, and the part of her profile that is public has several pictures of the horse. I didn’t get an answer, but it’s unclear how active she is there, so I’m not sure if she received it in time. I’m not going to judge–there are a ton of possible scenarios and it’s not useful to speculate. But I hope the mare winds up in a good place, wherever that may be.

the gelding went for about $23,000

I agree she may not have known, good for you for sending.

Sorry is it Cranbury or Cranberry??

Because I’ve heard of Cranbury auctions through stories about the women who runs it and I’d stay away.

anyone have any updates? They had one on their FB site that sold for 17500 (QH) but then deleted him and posted no updates.

This is good advice, and I say this from personal experience after purchasing two of their “rescue” horses just before they were about to be sent back to New Holland for auction. One of them dropped dead several weeks later from a massive intestinal infection, the other had a serious upper respiratory infections that took months of repeated antibiotics to clear up.

Another purchase (not mine) arrived to her owner a rack of bones, with pneumonia that wouldn’t respond to treatment and, IIRC, cultured positively for MRSA. After $10k of vet bills at the hospital, she was finally put down.

We aren’t sure of the source of the intestinal infection as we didn’t necropsy, but it almost certainly wasn’t something she picked up in quarantine at our farm.

The pneumonia horse could have been quickly and easily treated if antibiotics were given early. She was not a rack of bones when her photo was initially posted for sale, so something happened in the few weeks between then and when she was picked up/delivered to her new owner.

I’ve been hoping for an update too…

I would love any info about the holsteiner gelding from anyone who knew him in NJ - he is presently at my farm and at present there are some significant gaps in my timeline.
thanks

Maybe send a PM to TwoStrides. Looks like that poster knows that horse and can give you some info on him. Good luck!

There’s a few people on my facebook that frequent Cranbury. They were posting very angry that “someone” was ring side inflating all the prices.

I do know people that have bought from there because they will refund you if you’re not satisfied with the horse before a week has passed.

I don’t have the stomach for auctions.

Inflating prices is pretty common, but pretty crappy. That’s an awful lot of money though for a horse you can’t do a PPE on.

I agree. I think people were upset because Cranbury promotes itself as the “anti-New Holland” a “classier establishment”.

Were they not allowing PPE before this big auction? I know you could go and see the horses before hand in the barns.

I think you could trot the horse for the vet but no flexions. I think the vet could feel the legs. I am not sure about allowing xrays. The horse basically needed to be visibly lame. I doubt that drug testing for ACE, NSAIDs etc… would be allowed. So not a PPE by any stretch.
