Creative, natural riding ring borders

My ring is not quite a year old. There’s one corner and side where I’m getting valleys after a heavy rain (blue lines). The land gently slopes away from the ring, nothing steep. The ring itself drains beautifully, but I need to stop this runoff. The ring is inside my pasture and I’d prefer not to put a wood border around (my ring builder suggested 6x6s). I was thinking of getting some mulch and building up a border that way. I know I’ll have to replenish it over time. Has anyone had this issue? What was your fix?

You’ll need to put proper drainage (a drain that blocks the footing from flowing out but allows the water) and a real border (6x6s or the like) otherwise your footing will continue to wash out into your field. I have the exact same issue and have a hole in the corner of my arena because my builder didn’t do it properly. I’ve been fighting it for years. Do it now before you lose more footing.

There is no way around having a footboard. It should have been installed before you put your top footing in. But maybe you can cut it in. You want it about 2" over the top of the footing so if you get a lot of rain at once, the water can go over. If you make a berm or whatever, material and grass will accumulate there and start taking over your area.

Be aware that anything the you put in now to stop bedding from leaving will change how this drains, which means your “drains beautifully” might not be so beautiful anymore.
