Creep Feed

Can anyone help me find a creep feed/foal specific feed in Nor Cal? LMF which is pretty readily available doesn’t seem to have one and Progressive is not available around these parts.

TIA!

LMF still makes their Development feed, I believe. Is that not what you’re looking for?

I’ll take a look at it thanks

Tc mare and foal?

How old is the foal? Until a certain age they don’t digest many things well, so need a milk-based feed until then.

You could order the Progressive Foal’s First. You wouldn’t need but a few bags until he was old enough to start on a good Growth feed.

The LMF Development isn’t milk-based so not my first choice if the foal is less than 3 months old.

With barley and oats as the first 2 ingredients, my guess is it’s fairly high in NSC too, which makes it one I wouldn’t feed at all. I don’t know that for sure - about the NSC - but the ingredients suggest it.

Triple Crown Growth. But only after 3 months of age. My colt is getting a taste of it now – when I can keep the pan away from his mother, the hungry hungry hippo. He will be 3 months old on August 24th.

Baby will be 11 weeks old this week. Thanks for the info.

Baby doesn’t need creep feeder yet. I have also found that depending on the mother, those creep feeders don’t last very long… Wait until baby is 3 months or older an then go strictly by his weight. If he looks good then chances are his mother lets him share her food.

11 weeks definitely means a milk-based feed. If he’s in good weight, doesn’t have leg issues, then he doesn’t need anything. Just keep him out of mom’s food - separate for feeding if you have to. If he starts to get thin due to her milk not providing enough calories, then order the Progressive Foal’s First Starter and Creep. You won’t need many bags - 2 at the most probably - before he’s old enough to have a non milk-based feed of his own, IF he needs it.

Yeah, at this point I’m just going to wait. This week he is starting to look a lot more filled out; its funny because it seems like almost overnight! He has been quite ribby up until this point.

I asked about creep feed because the little guy definitely had a rough start and I wanted to make sure he was getting enough nutrition. Thanks for the help!

If there are concerns about nutrition, then look at Rejuvenaide or Rejuvenaide Plus, or something similar - Foal Aide is another. You could mix it with a tiny bit of whatever he’ll eat. You could call and talk to Don and tell him what the mare’s diet is, the condition of the foal, etc, and see if he recommends anything. If the mare’s diet is good, and the foal has straight legs, etc, then he shouldn’t say he needs anything. Of course, nobody can know that for sure without testing the mare’s milk, but reasonable assumptions can be made.
