Cross Bite/ Misaligned Jaw?

Took a peak in pony’s mouth (only able to see the incisors - pony is not a fan of having mouth messed with) and noticed the top and bottom teeth are not aligned. Either the top or the bottom is off to one side (laterally) by about a quarter inch. I don’t think I’ve ever seen another horse like that. Googling got me nowhere likely due to not knowing the correct term for what I saw. Pony has seen the chiro who adjusted the TMJ and the dentist who did not note this misalignment. Is this something that can or should be corrected by dental work? Or just a normal/ acceptable deviation from the norm that won’t affect pony?

Have you confirmed that there is actually a misalignment and you did not just catch the pony at a weird time?

If I was worried about my pony’s bite I would schedule an appointment with my vet so everything can be looked at with proper sedation.

I had a pony like this and come to find out he had had a fractured jaw bone (or something, it was a while back) prior to coming to me, probably when he was a colt. The vet thought he may have had his head stepped on by his dam. Don’t know how she could tell but that was her guess. Anyways, his jaw didn’t align and he had lots of dental issues over the years because of it. Also bitting issues. I ended up riding him bitless.
I’d get an x-ray to see exactly the cause and take it from there.

I agree that your pony should be seen. It’s better to know what is going on now rather than wait and risk having complications in the future.

How old is your pony?
