Did I miss it in the other threads about these Olympics, has where exactly the cross country course is going to be located been determined?

I don’t know the answer, but if I had to guess, I’d say the golf course across the street.

I thought it was said that the golf course is not public property.

I was hoping that since they are announcing who is designing the course that they might also announce where the course will be located.

My bad. That’s what I get for assuming! I honestly haven’t been keeping up with the discussion.

If not the golf course, it looks they’ll be jumping fences on the track and in the shedrows.

"Work on the LA28 Olympic cross-country course will begin in the coming weeks.” But still crickets on the location. Interesting.

This article has a little more information.

From that article this snippet.

The air quality is going to be rough on horses (and riders) on XC

If they say so… :woman_shrugging:

Maybe they will be able to use the downhill turf course plus that chunk of land next to it.

Or we will begin the era of arena + parking lot eventing.

This would satisfy every riders thought when passing a golf course in a car.

There is no golf course “across the street.” It is 2 city blocks away, and the entire length of the Santa Anita Race Track property from the barns (figure about 3/4 mile from the barns). It is a municipal course owned by the local private equity firm Strato Partners who operates it on behalf of Los Angeles County. I doubt they would be willing to close for a year. They make millions off tee times.

This statement here, "Work on the LA28 Olympic cross-country course will begin in the coming weeks.” tells me it will be showcase eventing in the racetrack footprint.

I think this is going to very much true.

This was the most frightening line in the article and supports my fear above.

: he will design a course that challenges the world’s best while showcasing the heart of our sport to a wider global audience."

Olympic eventing will finally make the complete break from real eventing.

This has been coming for a long time. Personally I’m long past caring. But I have no stake in Olympic level eventing, so my opinion is not one that matters.

So LA 28 cross country is looking to be a parking lot afterthought? What kind of footing are they expecting to be established to run on? Or will we have a field of eventers slipping around like Royal Kaliber did in Athens? Or the pentathlon horses in the Tokyo soccer field since they refused to run the jumping in a prepared riding arena?

My money is it will be eventing showcase. It’s XC through arenas on a very compact course (4 minutes). So I bet it will be through the infield park, on the tracks, maybe the arboretum nextdoor?

I’m wondering what kind of financial disaster the entire LA Olympics is going to be with all the current and future travel bans the current administration is announcing.

My fear is that, just as it has done in the past, eventing will become whatever the IOC it is. Eventing has already shown it is happy to do express eventing, eventing showcases, etc. The problem is that the PTB want to have that connection to the FEI/IOC because that is where their money comes from.

My bigger fear is that this is Belinda’s way to finally offload Santa Anita. But we’re in the eventing forum so I’ll save my theories on that.

Although reading that the powers that be think there is plenty of room for an XC course exacerbates my fear that the Olympics are Santa Anita’s swan song. Because I don’t know where you are going to gallop unless you utilize the racing surface as part of the XC course. And you can’t tell me they’re going to destroy the racing surface “just” for the Olympics, especially not with all the money they have put into it. But if they’re done racing on it, well…

Maybe we will just put some VR goggles on the horses and stick them on a treadmill. Think of all the money we can save; virtual eventing!
(Please no one do this ever)

What I found interesting was the phrasing of Lochore being instrumental in figuring out the XC portion at Santa Anita. Who knew he was there under the radar while Galway got hoodwinked?
