Cross-post-Mail-order vet prescriptions: What states allow/forbid?

Pardon the cross-post, but somewhere here on COTH, I saw a link to a web site that listed states that require vets to provide prescriptions to their clients and those that don’t. I used the COTH search function, but the link was buried in another topic and I could not find it. I just realized perhaps I should have originally posted my question here in this forum.

From my post in Of-Course, someone kindly provided the AVMA link below, which is very interesting because it provides references to the wording of the specific law in the states requiring fulfilling the request for prescriptions.

The earlier post I’m referencing caught my eye because the link I’m thinking about ALSO listed the states that did not address or require vets to provide prescriptions.

And to my great surprise, in my state vets are not required to provide prescriptions…which is counter to every other state I had ever lived in before. So it was a bit of shock to find this out.

If your horse is on chronic meds, ask the vet for a prescription. Most vets will happily provide prescriptions, even if it isn’t required by law. At the clinic where my daughter works, they prefer that you order from the pharmacy of your choice and then have the pharmacy fax the prescription request. That way, they avoid confusion about what size bottle you want and where you want it mailed. They also avoid being on hold, as often happens when they have to call in a prescription.

BTDT…didn’t get the T-shirt.

Which is why that link I’m referencing caught my eye. I was quite surprised that this state did not require vets to dispense prescription as that had been my experience in every other state I have lived in.

Many states do not allow prescriptions to be shipped to customers, only to vets. That might be where the dispense without prescription comes from. Only the vet’s license number is needed.

Don’t get me started on this one, lol. I moved to PA from MA about eight years ago and was shocked that vets would not write prescriptions. I looked into it and was even more shocked to find that they were not breaking any law. Things have slowly changed over the years that I have been here. I find most vets are now willing to give prescriptions, but you do have to ask and sometimes they charge for it (again, legal). I never do ask, though, as most will tell you that drugs are where they make their money, not farm calls On the bright side, both my small animal and large animal vet practices are getting more competitive with online pricing.
