**Cross Posted ** Importing a Horse from Europe to Toronto, Canada

** Cross posted from Off Course in hopes someone has an answer in H/J! **

Hi all, my apologies if this thread exists elsewhere as I did do a search. There seems to be plenty of threads regarding import from Europe into major cities in the USA, however, I have yet to see one regarding import from Europe to Toronto Pearson.

I do have a few colleagues that imported from Europe back in 2012 and flight/quarantine costs were said to be around $5,000 for a gelding (which in my mind seems low comparative to USA) and a bit more for a mare. I just want to confirm if these rates were accurate or close to what it would cost in the present day. Has any of my fellow Canadian COTHers recently imported from Euro? If so, what were your expenses like? I am curious as this may be an option for the future. Thanks in advance!

I wanted to add that I do know the potential risks and consequences of importing queue Warmblood Import Nightmare thread , this is for speculation and future planning purposes. Thanks again!

Back in the day, around 2012 I used to operate a quarantine facility 40 min north of Toronto. We usually shipped via SeaAire. The geldings had blood tests by CFIA and normal cleared within 7 days. Mares had to be tested for STD’s and normally would be in quarantine for about 30 days. There is a, I Believe a private facility close to New York airport that can process the horses far more quickly than our government can, and horse became more likely to ship to New York, rest a bit and ship to Toronto once cleared.

This is interesting, thank you very much. Do you have an idea of what typical import (including flight and quarantine) would cost at your facility? Any idea of what the price difference would be flying to NY and ground shipping to Canada instead? Just trying to look at all options.

Sorry, no idea of flight charges today. Try contacting SeaAire. They are amazing to deal with. I used to deal directly with Caroline, however it’s been 10 years. Any international shipper will be able to give you pricing from NY to home. They should have a brokerage to get your horse thru customs. My day fee was 75.00 per day for quarantine. It’s a lot of extra work for the farm, you have to have the premise CFIA approved each time. Dress up and dress down every time you have contact with the horse. All feed and equipment have to be separate from the other barn and horse and you have to attend CFIA vet visits.

I believe the going rate is around $10-15,000 for the flight these days in Canada, depending on whether you have a full pallet or not.

For anyone wondering, I did happen to reach out to an agency in Germany and a receiver in Canada just for a ballpark price.

After everything said and done (may vary depending on where horse is being shipped within Germany), it’s looking like ~$12,000 for a gelding and just over $15,000 for a mare. Bit more if you are flying from the UK. Have prices ever risen!

Edited to add: Does not include HST/GST on horse’s value or horse insurance. This also doesn’t include ground shipping in Canada…

Is this in CAD or USD? And did you ask if the price went down for multiple horses?

This is in CAD, hence why it probably looks a little higher. This is the price for 1/3 pallet from Luxembourg, Germany.
