I am one of the few people that has had horrible luck with Schneiders. regardless of which one I buy, they seem to rip and not maintain their waterproofing. And I have given them so many chances!
Ugghhh, Thanks everyone, for such great feedback. I knew I could count on the eventing forum!
I like the fact that Smartpack has a great refund/replace policy, but their sheet is something like $180. I also like that the Original Rambos are still made in Ireland and have that inner waterproof layer that is independent of the outer layer (for $218). My Rhino blanket needed a rip repair and I knew that it wouldn’t disrupt the waterproofing. Plus, I don’t have to pay for waterproofing down the road. I dislike the strap under the tail and the lack of leg straps (like the Rhino). But I’m also not convinced that the “v-snap” is best for my horse. I’d rather pay more money upfront for a good sheet than have to deal with replacing it in a couple of years.
Interestingly, my horse does NOT have wide shoulders and I was surprised that the Rhino rubbed. Nor does he have a prominent withers. He’s had comparatively narrow shoulders for a warmblood and was rather gangly as a 4 and 5 year old, which is why I think the Weatherbeetas sit so low on his shoulders. He’s 7 now and has filled out alot since last year, so we’ll see how this winter goes.
If only I put as much thought into my OWN clothing!
I just bought Weatherbeeta’s brand new top of the line blanket (1680 denier) and currently in testing stages. I am very impressed with the out-of-the-bag quality and features so far, time will tell if it holds up. I got the medium weight with hood and it came with a fleece sheet for $316, also has a lot of other features that I could not find on any other blankets.
I bought my horse a Rhino last year, within a week it had shredded. I do love the Rambo I have, three years old and still looks new.
I have quite a few horses, and they all wear turnout sheets (in winter on top of their other turnouts) so this is always an interesting subject for me.
I have had good results with the Weatherbeetas over the years, and they fit that middle of the line price point too.
I liked my Baker turnout, but it managed to get horribly ripped last winter, with a horse who never rips his blankets and who was turned out alone. So that is a mystery.
I really like my Rambos, but don’t like the price, especially for the horses who go out with others… nasty old broodmares love to take a chunk out of each other just for fun.
I’ve only had a couple of Schneider’s and they were OK too.
Another Rambo vote here, all the horses at our barn wear them and they’re turned out in herds. We mostly have the Rambo Wug style. Our BO actually “recommends” (nicely requires ;)) them because they’re so much easier to put on and off than all the different kinds with a million buckles and straps, plus they last longet than most blankets. Her logic on the cost is, you can buy one $350 Rambo now and have it last you several years (many of ours are going on 10 years), or you can buy a $175 blanket every year because it gets destroyed so much more easily.
Even if the SmartPak costs $180, amortized out it’s $18/yr.
Honestly, worry about fit first, then durability. If the turnout sheet doesn’t fit and gives him sore shoulders, why worry about brand?
But, having said that, I have found Dover’s/Rider’s Int’l. to be the best value. I love my Rambo, but if a sheet fits the horse and is durable, that’s my go-to choice. But, each horse has meant trying a different brand, as the horses are always built differently.
I forgot about Dover’s Riders brand - they have been very durable and fit my quite broad TB horses well.
I can also report good luck with the Northwind turnouts. I have heard that Dover will replace them too, if they tear.
I have never tried the Baker turnouts but I’m so glad to hear they seem to hold up so well; maybe I’ll try one for my filly when she’s stopped growing and I can invest in something she can wear for a long time. How is the fit on the Bakers? Do they fit well on broader, well-sprung builds, or are they better suited for more slender builds?
The Schneiders blankets seem to be hit-or-miss. . . I had one that lasted four years, one that’s lasted 10 years. . . and several of their blanket liners which hold up for about three-four years (not bad for the price though). I bought their Tekno Fleece blanket last year and it’s a really useful piece of horse clothing - but I’ve only had it a year, so the jury is out on how long it will last.
I’ve had excellent luck with the Weatherbeetas a decade ago and then they seemed to cheap out a bit on materials/construction and the pendulum seems to have swung back to quality again, but I haven’t bought one in a while.
Smartpak has a nice replacement policy on their ballistic nylon turnouts but who wants to keep sending in and replacing damaged blankets? I don’t have that kind of time. Good luck!
