Crosspost-turnout sheet recommendations?

Hi All,

Crosspost from dressage, because I’m really not sure where to put this.

I’m looking for a turnout sheet that will fit warmblood-type horses, is actually waterproof (I’ve been reading reviews online), and hopefully won’t break the bank.

My horse is out 24/7 in his own pasture with a very nice run-in shed. When it starts to rain, he’s the first one in the shed. That said, he can be hard on blankets (he likes to roll, etc.) so I need 1000+ denier and reliably waterproof sheet. His medium weight blankets are a Weatherbeeta (fits a bit low on the shoulders) and a Rhino (puts rubs on his shoulders after a while).

Any suggestions?? Thank you!

Have you tried the Dover Northwind line? They aren’t perfect, but the price is great and they last!

My horses are tough on turnouts, and I have had the best luck with the Baker turnout sheet. I have one that is 10 years old!!

I have been buying nothing but Tough 1 turnouts as my old blankets bite the dust. They are sold by State Line. Another top pick is the V-Tech sold by Schneiders [SSTack.com] (It is one of my favorite online stores).

Thanks for the suggestions! I am looking at the Northwind line. Baker, yes, I forgot about them.

Lord Helpus, I was actually looking at the Tough 1 sheets, in particular the Paisley because it is 1200D. That blanket got a number of bad reviews, including many that said it wasn’t waterproof. I did try Schneiders’ Euro collar, and the seam really laid hard on my horse’s withers (I sold it on). The v-tech looks promising. Thanks!

I’m currently going back and forth deciding on the vtech for my highbwither mare or the smartpak with the 10 yr warrantee!

My Rambos are the gold standard, but the Schneider’s are the absolute best bang for your buck.

I like the Rambo Originals. My first one is a heavy which I bought when I first got my horse. It is at least 15 years old. I have two other sheets that are at least 12 years old. They are all still waterproof. My horse destroyed the Weatherbeeta that he had in weeks, and he lives with my daughter’s horse who is a serious destroyer. I find that the Originals hold us better than the fancier Rambos, they are cheaper too.

Edited because I did the math and the blankets are older than I remembered.

I have one of the Smartpaks with the 10 year warranty. So far so good(going on year 2)! Not so sure how well it would hold up if you are in a field with a bunch of rowdy blanket destroyers. But it fits my gelding well and keeps him dry.

I bit the bullet and tried the Rambo’s 6-7 years ago. Has been only blanket that did not rub my horses shoulders. He’s got massive deep chest. I don’t use the tail thing or leg things—and it always stays on fine. Still waterproof.

warning though; I no longer will use the kind with the V chest snaps with rings BECAUSE: I had the fly sheet w that too—he got his canine teeth caught in the ring, trapped his head on his chest, panicked, reareared, fell over, I had to get a rope thru the chest pull it off his teeth to free him. He got banged up and it was scary as hell. When I called the vet they said they had seen exact same thing happen before with that style of chest closure. Another vet I consulteed for a lameness issue possibly caused by the accident said I was lucky, he had seen horses with broken jaws from that exact same sstle chest snap and accident. The only reason I’m still endorsing Rambo at all is because you can get the original style chest and they are such a stinking good rug/waterproof/last a long long time.

I had two horses (and know of others) that severely cut their jaws on Northwind blankets that had buckel front closures. I think they may have redesigned them…but just pointing out that can happen on various types of front closures.

My tough 1 turnout lasted about 2 days before it just tore apart at the seams. Total garbage. I have weatherbeetas going on 5 years of use on that same horse with little sign of wear.

Buy the Rambo (yes, it’s expensive right off the bat) and have a sheet you won’t have to replace for years. Don’t judge them by the Rhinos. Rambo beats the Rhino hands down.

I’ve used these as well and had good luck with them being waterproof and durable. Mine is a few years old and has one tear from this last winter but very minor. Has been perfectly waterproof through some very heavy rains.

Doesn’t matter so much because they replace them, no questions asked. They sent me 3 new ones last year for my blanket destroyer.

I also love my baker–it’s going on 4 or 5 years now and still looks almost brand new–I just had to replace the hind leg straps ($10 fix)! I also have a weatherbeeta (medium weight–honestly didn’t care for it), Kensington light weight–love it, and also looks brand new after 4-5 years, and just got a new rhino medium weight that I haven used yet but seems like great quality!

With my previous horse he fit the Dover Riders very well and they held up. He was a stocky QH.
My current horse is a very high withered Arab cross. I like the Vtek from Schneiders and I also use the combo neck. Because of his withers the high neck, mid neck or combo neck seem to put less pressure on the withers.
When I washed the Arctic combo neck for the last time of the season this spring it ripped on a seam in the shoulder dart. I sent pictures and volunteered to have it repaired locally. They declined and sent me a new one. Bonus they didn’t want the old one back.
I will either have it repaired and donate it or just have it on hand for the back-up. We have a number of horses at the barn I board at that are that size. It is nice to have spares. Although if I donate it somewhere I will feel less guilty

Another Rambo lover, mine is 6 years old. Washed carefully in cold water with Rambo blanket wash, and still waterproof and intact.

I purchased a Country Pride Paladin High Neck Turnout Sheet today from Big D’s. At this time I can’t comment about it’s durability but I really like the fit. The shoulder gussets start high on the sides and it’s roomy without seeming too big. I have Rambos, Rhinos and Smartpaks and for the money, $84.50 on sale, this blankets fits great on my TB. I’ll let you know in the future how the hardware (too cheap and it doesn’t hold up) and fabric (1200Denier) can take punishment. You might try cross posting on Horse Care or Around the Farm forums.

Another vote for Smartpak!

Don’t get me wrong, I love my Rambos still, but I don’t think they are as well made as they used to be (nor are the Schneiders, and probably a lot of others as well). But with a 10 year guarantee it’s tough to beat the warranty on the Smartpak Ultimates! I’m not going to say they are indestructible, and there some features of other blankets that I prefer, but when you can get repairs or replacements, no questions asked, for 10 YEARS, you’ve got me sold. My crew is fairly hard on mine and I’ve sent back various pieces of the Smartpaks over the last 3 years. Quick turnaround, great customer service. Honestly it’s now cheaper and easier for my horse to get these replaced as needed than to deal with wash/rewaterproof/repair anything else. I just hope they can continue it! And bonus is that they offer 20% off sales on a regular basis so be sure to buy them then!
