I recently adopted a wild filly on 10/6. It took me three weeks to get a halter on her and she was adverse to being touched before then. Once I could touch her, I noticed that she had bumps on her chest. I picked at them and the skin was dry and not irritated underneath. No oozing. They seemed to be itchy - she liked me to scratch them. It’s almost impossible to get a vet in my area and since she’s just halter broke, she doesn’t get in the trailer yet. I had a young vet come look at her and my mare who got lesions on her back after moving her. The mare’s lesions look totally different - the skin is red and sensitive underneath. The vet prescribed SMZ’s for both. 10 pills for the mare and 5 for the filly.
That night, I accidentally left the gate between their pens unlocked (something I NEVER do) and they switched sides. I don’t know how much SMZ the filly ate, but I’m guessing it may have been double what she should have had if not more. She was flat out the next morning. I texted the young vet and called the vet hospital as well. They had me give her banamine, walk her and give lots of fluids. She perked back up pretty quickly that morning. No poop in the evening, but the next morning was her usual self with LOTS of poo.
Now I’m really having a hard time trying to decide whether to start her on the SMZ’s again. I’m really afraid she may have a reaction to a normal dose after eating that overdose. The young vet thinks it will be fine, but I’m not sure she’s seen enough to know. The bumps continue to come back only on the chest.
