After reading the article about Victor, I am curious what the general breakdown of the purses are? How much does the jockey, trainer, and owner (typically) get?
Owner gets 60% of the purse when his horse wins. Jockey and trainer get 10% of the 60%.
So the owner really only gets 40%. Keep in mind when reading the total amount a horse has won is the “gross”. Subtract another 20% that went to the trainer and jock. Plus some trainers require another 2% for the employees, Barn Stake.
It also cost $35,000 to $50,000++ in training and care expenses.
Also New York has deductions by the bookkeeper for various expenses such as the Backstretch Employees Pension Fund. When I was running the farm office and posting these expenses I could figure an additional 2.5-5% from the gross purse.
So 60% to the winner, and the other 40% to everybody else in the race? I how far down the placings do races pay?

It varies .
As Palm Beach said it varies. Pretty much the standard at most tracks; 60% to the winner, 20% for 2nd, 10% for 3rd. The remaining 10% depends on the race track as to how many horses in the race get a piece of it.
This is a chart from Gulfstream which pays back to 7th. The break down is shown after “Value of Race”

Yup, NY nickle and dimes for a lot of stuff. I think it is closer to 8% now
At Woodbine, the also-rans get $400.00 just for showing up. That pays the jock, the pony, and the Lasix fee.
I think most tracks pay the also rans enough to cover the jock, pony, lasix, gate and other mandatory race related fees. I empty my accounts at most tracks at the end of the year, and don’t recall ever getting a bill or anything if I start a horse the following year and finish up the track.
