Current effective EPM treatments?

My new horse, purchased 6 months ago now has EPM, confirmed today. Have not talked to the vet yet. She left a message and mentioned “Protosoa pellets.” Anyone familiar with this? What have you used? I have used herbal treatments and immune boosters in the past.

Marquis. Double dose for the first 3 days. Vitamin E, 10,000 iu natural form.

I concur with this treatment.

I’m not familiar with the product, but perhaps this is what your vet was referencing: https://www.merck-animal-health-usa.com/product/equine/Protazil/1

I agree except we did 4 times dose for first 4 days. Don’t mess around with herbal crap if you want the best chance of recovery.

of course, you can do that too but don’t neglect the actual meds.

We used Marquis for 2 months, with a max dose of Vitamin E and monthly accupuncture. Also recommend the tTouch rehab book. It’s simple exercises that seemed to really help with rehab and relearning their proprioception . My horse came out with minimal residual deficits and returned to almost pre EPM performance as an event horse. Good luck. The disease sucks!

Triple dose on the first day, then double dose for 6 days, followed one dose daily for 19-20 days. Test and if needed another 30 days. Max out Vitamin E plus massage for body soreness. My friends horse seems to be doing really well. Back to full work and minimal lingering effects.

What joiedevie99 said - I’m using the UltraCruz Natural Vitamin E pellets: https://www.scahealth.com/p/ultracruz-equine-natural-vitamin-e-plus-horse-supplement . 2 scoops per day (as indicated on the bag) = 8000 IU. We still have a few days of Marquis left to go - vet said I could get by with 3 tubes, but it wasn’t that much more expensive to get the box of 4 and the additional doses aren’t going to hurt.
28 year old Pony loves her Vitamin E, doesn’t particularly object to the Marquis (I’m told it’s supposed to be apple flavored) and I’m seeing definite improvement.

Good luck to you and your horse.

We’ve done Orogin from Pathogenes as well as Protazil pellets, with good results. My horse has been healthy and happy for the past 3 years.

Contact Pathogens. Treat, test and monitor. The advise about T-touch is also good. There is an EPM yahoo group you should join.
