Custom Breyer Horses?

I searched on the forum, but did not see any recent posts so forgive me if this has been asked a million times and I’m just an idiot.

Does anyone know of a good custom breyer horse maker that can also source the horse for you? I want to get one done for my old guy before it’s too distressing to think about.

Thanks!

I’ve never commissioned a Breyer but I recently finished selling off a large childhood collection so am somewhat familiar with names in the hobby.

The “Modelholics Anonymous” Facebook page would be a good place to ask this question. The people in the group will be able to give you specific artist recommendations and offer suggestions about which Breyer mold would suit your guy.

Danielle Vanderpool of “Dan Van’s Customs” purchased a large lot of models from me and was easy to work with. I’ve never seen one of her models in person but the photos on her Facebook page are stunning works of art.

There are lots of people who can make a customized Breyer for you, and indeed it’s pretty ordinary for them to get the body for you. There are a couple of dimensions to consider:
• Your budget
  • The scale you want - from micromini (about 1 1/2" tall) to "traditional" (1/9th scale, the large size Breyers)
  • How close your horse is to an existing Breyer (or Stone) mold in a position you want
  • How impressive a result you want
Smaller horses, with less sculpting changes, from less established artists will cost less. You will probably want to budget at least $200, though prices can get well into the four figures for artists in demand and/or for a piece with more work needed. A simple paint job is pretty easy to commission, and the good news is that there are a lot of very very nice Breyer molds to choose from now.

Good places to get a sense of prices and possibilities:

You can also look at this site of original factory Breyers to get a sense of what is already out there that might match your horse in a way that suits:

Thank you both! Yeah, he’s a simple chestnut Appendix so I’m hoping that it won’t need to much body mods.

My daughter paints custom Breyer horses, and she is a part of several facebook groups with established artists. If you are on facebook at all and would like me to get the names of the groups for you, I can. That might be a good starting place for you too! Just let me know, shoot me a PM if you need the names of several good custom horse groups on FB.
