Custom Bridle Rack- making my own!

Alright so I’m not a total craft whiz but I am creative and I think this project could be fun. I travel to shows at least once a month and I want a nice bridle rack for my tack room but I can’t afford to pay a gazillion dollars for a custom order one.

I was thinking of staining a wood board with Walnut stain, trimming it with a flat-type shoe mould and using this type of hook for the bridles…

Thoughts? Suggestions? I REALLY want to use the hooks below but they are way to costly

I am also screwing these onto the back to hang it using portable bucket hooks…

I would love to hear feedback from those who have attempted this or post pictures of your custom bridle rack for horse shows.

FUN PROJECT!! I love DIY stuff. Be sure to take pics!

I don’t care for the bridle hook you have selected, because I like the crown piece of my bridles to hang on something larger and more rounded, (like the one you can’t afford) that maintains the shape of the crown, if that makes sense? I have seen coffee cans used, maybe you could paint them to give a nicer appearance.

But making your own bridle rack is a great idea, good luck and be sure to post some photos when its finished.

OP, what about buying the ones covered in rubber then spray painting them? These are only $2.99 each, and this is only $4.99 each.

Spray paint isn’t expensive, either. Please do post photos when you’re done!

You could use brass-colored spray paint. It does wear off, but touch-ups are easy. I used it on kitchen cabinet knobs once.

I have some of those $2.99 ones in my tack locker and they are perfect for the job and so inexpensive. Good idea BBHM.

…or if you are really being cheap, you can use tuna fish cans and spray-paint them. We did this in Pony Club years ago. I even nailed up a few in the school horse tack room where I ride for extra bridles. They work great.

I will have to post pictures of my DIY bridle rack when I get home! Mine is not stained as it is just extra storage, but I love it and it has held up well over three years. It is a combination of materials from Michael’s and Home Depot. It couldn’t have cost me more than $30 to make and once I had my supplies was assembled in under an hour. I have three bridle hangers - rounded wood, even storage for earplugs! - and two hooks in between for martingales etc.

oooh, I want to see yours Boston! I have a new tack space at my boarding barn… and no where to hang my tack! I need to make something, currently hanging my bridle on hooks, and I do not like what it is doing to the crown.

Would love to see pics as well! Have a brand new (empty) tack room I need to do something with

Probably shouldn’t have done this but some cool ideas: http://pinterest.com/search/?q=Tack+room

I am happy to show it off tonight  It surprised me with how well it came out given my limited handiness.

found this one by googling… I like the idea! And I think it would be fairly easy…

Ohhh! and found this one from another Cother

I made one of these!

I took an 8’ oak board. Stained it in walnut and poly-urethaned it. I found right angle wood trim that I spray painted gold and trimmed the board. Took the cheap-o bridle hooks, sprayed them in the same gold and put my name plate in the middle.

I think it cost me $50 and it looks good! Not as good as a pheonix west bridle rack, but not bad!

CHANGE OF PLANS

OK, CHANGE OF PLANS.

I am going to purchase circular pieces of wood and cut them into semicircles and screw brass hooks under for martingales/spurs etc.

I just got really excited, I may start tonight!

Thanks for the tip, Boston! I will check out Michaels or Hobby Lobby

Love the one with the horseshoes.

What about these for the martingale to hang below the bridle? Or should I stick with brass??

So many options!

I use a half moon of wood about 4 inches deep with a flat piece nailed to the front to create a lip and then do hooks underneath. ours also have a sliding track with large hooks to adjust the hanging height.

This thread could not have come up at a more appropriate time and I can’t wait to see more pictures. I’ll be starting my own within this week, maybe next and will post pictures as well.

I plan to use scrap boards around the barn, stain them and use the semi-circle wood pieces for the bridles. I was thinking of enough spots for 6 bridles with an oval name plate in the middle with " Twin Pond Farm".

You guys are making me wish I had a jig and a bandsaw. I’d love to make custom racks and things for tack and other equipment.
