custom sewing - stock ties etc

I love to sew and think it would be fun to try making custom stock ties to sell. I have a Suitability pattern that includes a stock tie, but the style might not be current, so I thought I’d inquire here. My questions:

  1. Are traditional (untied) stock ties lined–i.e., made of 2 layers so no raw edges show?

  2. Is the shape of a traditional stock tie just a long rectangle? Some look like they have a narrower neck, others just a rectangle.

  3. What are suitable fabrics? Cotton of course, but how about cotton flannel, lightweight wool, microfleece, or silk?

  4. Would there be a market for “custom” traditional stock ties or is this a ridiculous idea? (be kind…)

I recently saw a thread asking about vests in custom colors etc. Would there be any interest in something like that?

Thanks for your help!

There are a number of people who make and sell custom stock ties, you can do a search on Etsy and E-bay (and here) to get an idea. A traditional 4-fold stock tie is just a long rectangle. There are lots of patterns for free online. Shaped ones, with a hole in the back so that they lie flatter, are also popular. As far as lining and material go, that depends on season, preference, use, etc.

Exactly this.

Also, I know most hunts have “their person”. We have a woman who does stock ties and even vests now, at our hunt. She does beautiful work and will pair her ties with her vests. She uses a bunch of different materials, and they aren’t cheap. It is, however, quality work. Did I mention it was GORGEOUS?

There could be a market if you found a customer base. Maybe in Dressage land too! Do you have a local hunt?

Nearest hunts, to my knowledge, are about 2-3 hrs away.

Thanks to everyone who responded!
