Cute and unusual foal face markings
My 2 year old has what we call a backwards question mark and towards the end of it on one side she has a rectangly thing that is darker than the rest of her coat.

Roxy, I nearly did a double take, your 2 year old looks so similar to my 2 year old filly. Same color even down to the not fully black legs, two white socks, and a “squiggly” stripe. I need to get a recent picture of her and will post it in the next few days. What is she?

Thank you Genevieve and Spacely for the “Berry” good comments and thank you Jill for producing Raspberry Wine (with her seahorse on her face)! I will take credit for having the good sense to buy her! Wrightwood, I know your filly and remember when she was born. She really is lovely and special.

Really? I can’t wait to see photos of yours! Mine is an Irish Sport horse by Carlow Clover out of my former Jr Jumper mare by Cavalier Royale.

I need to get some close ups of my Weltmeyer’s top lip - it’s pretty crazy (I feel bad for the vet who has to draw it all on his passport) but here are some of the other bits of wild white we’ve had over the years…the middle foal had an honest to goodness blue spot smack in the middle of his snip - perfectly round!

My little foal has a really cute blaze and kissing spot on the end of his nose. What’s surprising is that he is chestnut and going to stay that way out of two grey parents!

How about polka-dots? This is our best producing broodmare, Rox.

And this is her 2010 filly…she tried to get the dots…
Wow! I love her. Any idea what causes those spots?

Strange how all the chestnuts get the best markings.

No idea, but we love it. It’s definitely unique!

The little lady on the left in this shot (http://pets.webshots.com/photo/2286667870066718914QWyURg) just fought for her life and survived, so I’m thrilled to be able to post this picture (she is exquisite and wants to be a lap dog – she belongs to a friend of mine and colicked this past weekend, spent days in clinic, came home well, thank goodness). Her half sister (mine) has an intriguingly similar odd face marking (I find the little loops that go above their eyes pretty cool): http://pets.webshots.com/photo/2175333360066718914psqKQD. Both are by The Colonel.

Here are two pictures of two colts…
Both by the same sire - Sir Donnerhall - and out of mother and daughter mares.

First one is Cosmo SE

Since this is the “F” year for the KWPN, a friend of mine suggested naming him “Forgot My Star”!
Enjoy!

yesterday’s offering to the wacko colour gods

at least for me

Ticking

Love all the pictures! I have no idea what the genetics are on ticking in horses. I breed Australian Shepherds and ticking is a dominant color pattern and isn’t really desired in the show type Aussies. You obviously have to have white for the ticking to show up. If you have a solid colored (non-white) dog, you won’t see the ticking, but it will always rear it’s ugly head again. My oldest brood bitch has some ticking that I don’t mind, but some dogs just have way too much!

I love the cute baby pics!
I always think if the stallion Chequille Z when I think of cool face markings:

I am particularly fond of the face of this baby. I think the top part looks like a big heart, and she has a big double swirl in the middle:

Here are two pictures of my two year old filly, Odette. She also fits in the crazy face marking category with a squilly star and strip and a pink snip. Roxy, I wonder if they look similar as she is half Irish Sporthorse (out of my mare Bella, an ISH) by Olivier (DWB). She has more of your filly’s color in the spring but has those legs that are not quite black.

This is Accessorized by Aloha. She was bred by Joan Watt. My groom says it’s a lucky 7.

This colt went in my vet’s system as “Spermy” the day he was born, since that’s what my vet thought his face marking looked like. Poor guy! Photos are 1 day and 3 months.

I actually don’t think their markings or colors are at all similar but you are right in that there is SOMETHING about them that makes them seem similar? Maybe expression? Or head shape?

I definitely think it is head shape as she inherited her mom’s ISH head. Marking are definitely not similar at all, but both not typical. She is your filly’s color in the spring but her color seems to morph every season.
