Cutter/Reiner Trainers in San Antonio/New Braunfels area!

So I have talked about it with you all before… and I am finally in a decent place with money and have a steady job. So I am going to give it a shot! I am looking for a cutting trainer OR reining trainer in my area to take a lesson with. I’ve ridden english and western all my life, both competative and for pleasure. I’ve never done cutters, and I have only played with a reiner before.

As this is a trial lesson, the person HAS to have lesson horses. Also, since it is a “trail” lesson for myself to see if I like it, I would love for the cost to be under $100… I found a guy about an hour south of me, but he wants over $100 for a lesson… If I got into it heavier I might be willing to shell that out, but as someone just trying it for right now I would like to stay UNDER $100 per lesson.

So if anyone knows of any trainers in my area, please let me know who you reccomend. I live in New Braunfels, so I would prefer an hour or less of a drive but if its a little more that is fine too.

I’m an hour from Boerne, 45 mins from San Antonio, and about an hour (traffic depending) from Austin.

AQHA has a list of trusted professionals. I looked on it, but I didn’t find any cutting OR reining trainers in your area. If you don’t mind traveling about five hours to the Gainesville/Pilot Point area, you can find several.

Another idea might be to call the National Cutting Horse Association or the National Reining Horse Association – or maybe looking on those websites – to get recommendations. They should have a list of some sort.

But if you’re willing to drive to Gainesville, I’ll throw out a recommendation for Ed Dufurrena or Teddy Robinson, who are both great teachers with logical progressions in cutting.

For reining, I’d recommend Casey Hinton or Pete Kyle.

I have no idea what they charge for lessons.

I’ll mention, though, that reining and cutting are very very very different sports. In general, though not always, reining is a little more pocketbook-friendly, because cutting requires cattle, and cattle are expensive.

I tried those websites, but I only came up with a few in the area. I feel like there sould be more, but maybe there isn’t! I’m moving to Stephenville next fall, and I found a TON around there. I’m just wanting to try it out now.

I do understand its pricey for cutters, like I said I could be willing to shell out the money if I decide I like it. I just find $100 per lesson for the FIRST lesson a little much if I decide I don’t love it. I can’t wait to move closer to the DFW area where I’ve seen a bunch!

I will try the NRHA because NCHA didn’t bring me such success.
