Cutting or Reining Lessons - MD?

Low level dressage rider here who is a glutton for punishment and wants to see how the other half lives! Im never making it to the olympics and jumping isn’t my thing. Looking for a mental break from 20m circles.

Are there facilities near Montgomery County, MD that offer lessons geared towards cutting or reining or another specific western discipline? I am searching for formal instruction in a safe environment (“trail” barns need not apply) to try something new and learn a different perspective. I would need a facility that provides school horses.

Hoping someone has a lead! (or this might be crazy and the equivalent of someone on the dressage board asking if they can hop on a PSG warmblood for a quick lesson)

Here is the NRHA Professionals list. There are some reining trainers listed in MD. Don’t know if any of them would have lesson horses available, but it can’t hurt to ask.

NCHA has one as well.

thanks for the ideas! I have sent out a few feeler emails. If anyone else has a lead… keep em coming! (It will increase the odds of hilarious photo posts chronicling my adventure)

Rhonda Replogle in Clear Spring isn’t a reining or cutting trainer, specifically, but she is a kind western trainer who’s accustomed to teaching beginners. She’s more oriented toward breed shows, but you might enjoy her big heart.

She’s also an NRCHA judge, so she’ll know how to get you started in reining and/or cutting and/or reined cow horse.

I was hoping to see Kent Stough’s name on this NCHA list. He & his daughter, Cassidy, are FABULOUS! Used to video them all the time - kind, patient, talented… I hope he’s close enough to you!

That would be THIS list: http://www.nchacutting.com/ag/contact/trainers.php#20 (sorry - just checked back and realize I hadn’t linked) Scroll down to Maryland - Kent is listed.

Check out Jason Charles - Newoxfordlanestables.com

Jason competes locally, NRHA, and Quarter horse level reining.

Jason is a great all around western horseman. He’s also done team penning, although I’m unsure about cutting. He has some quality lesson horses and is involved with alot of western disciplines. Last year he rode in the mustang millionaire and was in the top ten.

He’s located near Gettysburg PA and would be worth your drive! He also offers some clinics as well.

Update #1

Discovered I had a connection with someone who rides for Gil Porter Cutting Horses (Sandy Spring, MD). Not much info on google but he has a small private training/sales operation. Had so much fun at my first lesson last night! Got to test out w/t/l and worked on stopping and backing/turning. Think my goal is to get good enough to try and work the flag (so I have something to show for my efforts!). As soon as I can get my brain to let go of transitions and accept that things are asked for quickly/directly/and with only 1 aid instead of my usual inside/outside, “tickle”, half halt I think I will be set!
