CWD, Antares, Butet Fit suggestions

Aloha from Hawaii!

I’m in tough spot trying to source a saddle to fit my new mare. I bought a wool flocked Butet with a MW tree in hopes that it could be flocked for a decent fit, but a saddle fitter finally came out to the island (a few months after purchase) and strongly suggests I find something with a better fit off the rip instead of sinking money into flocking something that may never make her happy. Needless to say, I spent a lot of money from a reputable used saddle business to purchase the saddle I did, and they’ll only work with me on a trade for something else she has in stock or a brand she regularly sources (Mostly French brands). The saddle fitter I had out really only likes english/ German wool flocked saddles, like a county and had limited suggestions for how to move forward. My mare isn’t super wide for a WB, but has a decent/ longer wither and a decent scapula. She is flat backed with a medium width spine. Per the fitter, the Butet had enough pommel clearance on top but not on the sides, and the tree points on the bottom were too wide. Obviously it’s challenging/expensive to fly a bunch of saddles out for trials, so I’d like to narrow it down to some models that may work. Have been thinking of a CWD Hunter Mademoiselle with the pro panels, PA [705 205 305] RT RG, as it may ride like the Butets I love but also can better accommodate her conformation. Any suggestions are very much appreciated!

Hmm. What brands do you have access to for a trade in? I’m not a fitter but I can see why a County was suggested vs a foam French saddle.

Your horse looks like one of mine - I actually ended up in a Thornhill 24K, wool flocked on the Pessoa XCH tree. It was cheap and it works for us. FWIW I have a Pessoa on the same tree but foam panels and it did NOT work; wool flocking = volume and adjustability to fill in gaps. My CWD and Tad Coffin also did not work - both older saddles with very different shapes.

Being in Hawaii does make it super hard to do this, but does your fitter carry saddles? I’ve found it’s easiest to work with the person that can put hands on the horse. My fitter will work on anything you already have but if I were looking to buy something I’d just get one through her. It may be easiest/less expensive to consign the Butet and buy something that is better shaped for your horse from the get-go. Annoying, perhaps, but looking back I’ve spent WAY more than a new custom saddle on shipping things back and forth and reselling things I couldn’t return.
