CWD Saddles, esp the carbon fiber tree

Hi All, I did a search for CWD saddles and nothing has come up. I know I’ve seen posts discussing those saddles, but for some reason, I can’t get anything to come up using the search feature.

I am really interested in the flexible tree points, the cut out shoulder, and the new tree they are offering. Does anyone have information to share? I went to their website, and I can only get the home page to open. Thanks, fg

I have 2 saddles from CWD, one with the cut out shoulder and one relatively normal (both are the 1G model because that’s my personal favorite). They’re both great, but for my mare, who has a massive shoulder, the cut-outs made an enormous difference. She has so much freedom for her shoulder and you can see it in how much reach she has, particularly at the canter. There are videos on my YouTube where you can see the difference; anything from this year is with the cut-out saddle, prior years is the other saddle. I got the cut-outs on recommendation from my rep and I’m so glad that I did, as they made a huge difference for Nikki!

Thanks Supershorty! Very helpful information.

You’re welcome! I don’t know your location, but I could put you in touch with my area’s rep if you want - she is AMAZING and has really helped me a lot over the past few years, I’m sure she could answer some questions for you too. PM me if you want her phone number!

This is because someone has set the Search Engine to NOT recognize only 3 letters, so you can Search CWD saddles & then set the option from “threads” to “posts” so digging through the unrelated binnage is more efficient.

Way back, one could “fool” the SE by inputting “CWDspace” - sadly that no longer works :sigh:

There are loads of threads on here about CWD - the good, the ugly, the in-between
It’s not a magic saddle, works for some horses & some people

  • FP (the horse) absolutely HATED that tree even though rep felt that saddle was a much better fit than the other demo saddles we tried that day, did keep a few different CWD’s for a week over the next month or so … FP is just a County boy (shoulder fit is his nemesis) - he chose the Stabilizer & the rider came’round  (actually got a Stabilzer/Conquest hybrid)

ETA: anyway my point, is just try every saddle you can & find what works best for both horse & rider  reps are great as they should be able to put you into everything their company offers, independent fitters are great as they should be able to put you into a range of brands (but always check that they actually have demo saddles likely to fit both horse & rider - this applies to the reps & the fitters)

Thanks, alto. I still must be doing something incorrectly, as I just don’t get anything for CWD saddle(s) and I know there is stuff out there. And I agree- try as many as you can.

Hi All, Supershorty, I was able to ride w the cut out feature, and it helped my horse. I’ve decided to purchase a saddle, but am wondering if you purchased the grain leather or the full calf. I like to plain look…

Also, what seat did you buy? The saddle w the cut out shoulder had the flat seat, and I felt too far away from my horse in that one. Thanks, fg

Both of mine have a buffalo seat and grain leather flaps. I have the flat seat - I tried the semi-deep one and I really felt out of balance, but I’m sure it feels different depending on your build! I’m very small (I have a 16" seat and the shortest flap option, and I have to get special stirrup leathers as the standard ones are too long for me!), so the flat seat is enough for me, but you may prefer the semi-deep one.

Someone mentioned the other day having better luck with google than with the search tool here on CoTH. I just tried this as an experiment–I googled “CWD CoTH” and several threads popped right up.

If possible, sit in a brand new CWD as well as a nicely broken in demo - this will save you any shock when your new saddle arrives (especially if you go with grain  ).

Get some video of yourself riding - if you’re an “active” rider  go with grain or buffalo (I love the look of nicely broken in grain leather, calf will always be more sensitive to care & use & conditions, both calf & buffalo tend to be more “sticky” if that’s a feel you want/like).

Thanks, everyone. I appreciate the imput; I do not want to make a mistake w this order.

Oooh, that combination sounds good. Which parts of the Stabilizer and Conquest did you combine? It’s like an optimized zombie… in a good way.

My brand new CWD had grain flaps/calf seat and knees and I had it oiled before they sent it to me, it was very comfortable from the first ride and broke in easily and within a short period of time. And most of their demos were in fairly new condition anyway.

 An optimized zombie? I need to find ways to use this phrase.

Demo saddle#1 was about a month old
Demo saddle #2 was hot off the presses & had never been sat in or flaps rolled etc- QUITE the difference

(AFAIK neither had been pre-oiled - based upon appearance - don’t recall what rep said)

Rep had another client do one previously.
