Dachshund Lovers Roll-Call

Hi I’m Amber.

I have posted a few things in the dressage and horse care threads but Dachshunds are really my thing now.

So who else has Dachshunds? Are they rescues?

I foster and manage fundraising for Furever Dachchsund Rescue and its the most fun I could ever imagine.

Right now in my house I have 7 Doxies, 1 Beagle and 2 Huskies.

6 of the Doxies and the Beagle are fosters. I am swimming in a sea of little red weiner dogs!

I don’t know if anyone else is interested in this or if its even allowed but I’d love to get a thread or several going about fostering, volunteering and transports. We transport dogs all over the east coast and are always looking for help transporting or other rescues who may have dogs that need a ride.

I have a wonderful Daschund named Fritz. I never use to be a “small dog person”. He was a rescue and I was transporting & fostering him and another dog until they found homes. Well, needless to say that was several years ago and Fritz is still here - permanently.

He was borrowed to be used in a short, funny educational video about horse slaughter (it is NOT graphic or offensive = safe for anyone to watch):

Fritz’s video was such a success that when it was entered into a contest, it won a $1,000 donation to the Maryland horse rescue, Equihab Foundation.

I now have 3 dogs, so I can’t foster any more. But if there is some way I can help a doxie rescue from my computer screen, I’d be happy to. Fritz is such an awesome little guy, and I can’t believe anyone would have dumped him!?

Mine is a doxie/shi tzu mix. She was someone’s whoopsie. but i LOVE her. She’s such a pal, always wanting to be with me, in or out. She likes to come to the barn and help with chores I would seriously consider owning a full doxie when the time is right.

My mom bred doxies. I’m still partial to the standards, but they are getting really hard to find.

On the other end of the scale, my sister had a mini that weighed 6 lbs…she was SO tiny but mighty!

Standards

The standards are few and far between for sure! My first foster dog was a standard and I was so in love with him. My own dog is a mini and is cute but something about the elegance and serious look of the standard really drew me in. Its been a year since I had my first standard and I’ve had about 40 minis come through the rescue. I just now got in 2 more standard boys at the same time and it was such a pleasant surprise to find when they arrived that they weren’t minis as listed on the shelter paperwork.

I also just got in two SUPER tiny mini long hairs. They are soo cute but seem so fragile compared to my big sturdy red boys.

I have 3…and I LOVE them, will never be with out if I can ever help it. Right now all three are snuggled under the blanket while I surf on the computer.

My eldest is over 16, diagnosed with bladder cancer, but (knock on wood) doing well right now.

My middle child is 9, just rehabbed him from his 3rd spinal surgery ( 1 back, 2 necks)

My youngest is 3, was found running on the streets of Philadelphia.

I love how under “house training” it says “A work in progress”…isn’t that ALWAYS the way with doxies?

I don’t think I’ve ever known one that was 100% house trained. :lol:

I have a mini sandy piebald long haired that is the apple of my eye! She goes everywhere with me, and is a big hit when we go to Middleburg (of course, we must stop at Wylie Waggs every time). When I roomed with my bff, between the two of us, we had 5 doxies-mine, a red piebald mini longhaired, a sable mini shorthaired, a choco and tan mini shorthaired, and a black and tan standard shorthaired.

The eldest, Hannah, just passed this November at the ripe age of 17.

I used to show and field trial wire dachsies. I’m now down to two, a standard wire male from my last litter and a mini wire male that belongs to my daughter. My first dog was a dachsie and I’ll always have one.

I breed and show dachshunds. My mother started in the breed in the late 60’s. We had standard longhairs, but I bred them down to miniatures. I have 9 right now. Two of them will go into conformation, one has her first Rally title and my other male just got his championship and will now go into obedience training and Rally. I have also started 2 of them on Canine Nosework and hope to continue to work with them and get their titles there as well. I bred a field trial champion, but because of where I live, field trials are pretty far away. I will go back into Earthdog trials this fall…I also judge dachshunds. So I am a real lover of the little guys…

My little guy is 100% reliable and I’ve had several fosters (mostly owner surrenders) that were as well. I agree though that they are hard!! Prevention is really the only method I’ve found to be successful for dogs that weren’t started right when they were young. Most of the puppy mill and breeder dogs I’ve had have proven to be incredibly difficult and most of them never reach the 100% reliable stage. Its been my experience that the boys are much easier to house train than the girls. Little Sandy and her sister Mandy are wearing little puppy panties right now. I’ve had good success with the panties and with belly bands for late cut boys who like to mark.

My sister has a dox/corgie cross that’s been difficult to house train. I gave her a crate, and that’s helping, but she still has accidents when she’s out of her crate.

I might pick some of those up for my Pugs - they are usually pretty good about holding it all day, but if I get home late from work, sometimes I’ll come home to a puddle.

I have a standard dapple, but I wouldn’t call myself a lover of Daschunds…lol. He’s my mother’s dog and a rescue she picked up, but he stays at my house so he has company with my JRT and vice versa. I’m sure he’s a fine dog, but he’s just not my cup of tea. He sleeps 23 hrs out of the day and gets up that one hour to play, poop, and eat, but play is only on his terms and he gets nasty with my JRT at times. He’s just moody in general actually.

Yups! Ever since I met my (now) Dh we’ve had a Doxie around. He had a Red Standard while growing up and always wanted another one after she died (25 years ago). So for valentine’s day our first year together I happened upon a minature red female that was heading for the pound - that dog became his SHADOW and won me over to the doxies as well. Lost her last fall - he wasn’t sure he’d want another any time soon.

We had taken in a blk/tan mini doxie - little too hyper and “needy” - found her a great home with an older lady where she is well taken care of and spoiled contently.

Ran across a Standard Red male needing a home - owner went into a nursing home. So guess who came home 3 months ago Yeah first words out of my DHs mouth when he got him (I picked the dog up while DH was out of town) was “awwww…we have a weenie in our bed again”. I have never been around a standard, and I realize at 19# he is a “small” standard - and he isn’t fat any longer, he dropped 3 lbs since arriving by just being let go outside to run with the other two hounds (A Basset & Coonhound). He arrived at 22# of flubber - immediate diet & excercise, now he is a firm fit hound - who is still round, but at least now it doesn’t jiggle & flop when he trys to run. They said he was the runt of his litter which is why they had gotten him lol

I have a 5 yr old silver dapple big mini or small standard neutered male. Love of my life-rehabbing him because the neighbor’s white german shepherd attacked him last summer and he became paralyzed in the back legs. Slowly but surely he is getting use back. Current therapy is called a Power Plate-weird vibrating thing he stands on but ever since we started using it he’s been getting up and trying to walk everyday! Out in the woods (high motivation) he motors along really well with his sling slack. I just know one if these days it’s all going to kick in and he’ll get it and be ablet o walk on his own again.
Also have a 2 yr old silky wirehaired little girl. The sweetest thing ever. She loves her big brother and when he was down she’d crawl in bed with him and didn’t want to leave even to eat. She’s a healing dog. She comes with to vet and therapy appts and if a dog is nervous or hyper in the waiting room she goes over to it and looks it in the eye and lays down. the nervous dog becomes really calm and lays down too. It’s pretty amazing.
Love the Doxies. More spirit and try in them than any other dog I’ve had. Also the most heartache when my boy went down. I was a wreck. Getting thru it day by day!

No doxies here, but I was going to say I love a friend’s dachshunds and then realized that she’s here on this thread. Hah!

I’ve met some really nice ones that have come through the vet clinics for their various surgeries.

They keep you on your toes though!
