Dallas eventing barns

There is, sadly, a possibility I might be moving to Dallas via the husband’s job. I have searched threads before, but I wanted some new recs - an eventing barn where the people and trainer are down to earth, there are lots of adults, and they go to both schooling and recognized shows. I only compete (poorly) at BN right now, and have no aspirations to go above Training, so I don’t need or want a high-level program where the trainer leaves for the winter and/or is gone ALL the time across the country at competitions. I also can’t afford places with 1K-plus board.

Any good recs?

There are a few eventing barns outside of Dallas, in Flower Mound/Argyle. It took me about 40-45 min to get there from Dallas when I lived downtown but it isn’t a bad drive and its a very pretty area.
I’m sure other people will chime in, but I’d suggest Quail Run Farm in Argyle. It’s got everything you listed above. No trainer but there are several available nearby and some that come there frequently to clinic. It isn’t fancy but the care and turnout is good (good turnout is hard to find) and there is 80+ acres to ride over along with a xc course.

Sent you a PM.

I have a friend who rides at Buck Branch and really likes it. I think it is laid back and does a mix of larger and schooling shows. I beleive their pricing is reasonable too.

Felicia and Jeff are great, personable people and I know several people who recommend them.

lots of good options for boarding and training in the bartonville/argyle area. my wife and i board at Quail Run and it is fantastic. Loads of space, full cross country course, great barn owners, and a good group of folks.

there is no resident trainer, but there are lots of options close by.

The metroplex and Dallas is a huge area. Unless you want to drive 1-2 hrs. to get to the barn, your options will depend quite a bit on where you actually live, and/or work. The barns listed are all good. Flower Mound/Argyle is just north of DFW airport (so between Dallas & Ft. Worth), Rosehill is north of Plano, Buckbranch is south of Dallas. Additionally, there are some options in the Aubrey/Pilot Point area (north of Frisco) or over on the Ft. Worth side of the metroplex, such as Willow Draw, Curragh and PF Flyers.

If you have a trailer, there are more options because you could haul-in to people like Mike Huber/Heather Morris, Ellen Doughty, Kadi Eykamp or Stuart Black.

Southern Cross, where Ellen is, is east of Dallas in Terrell and I believe their board is $600 and it’s a nice facility.

There are a lot of eventers in this area with quite a few schooling show options as well as two H/J local circuits and an active dressage group. You might check out the North Texas Eventing Assoc., Dallas Dressage Club, Ft. Worth Dressage, North Texas HJ Assoc. and Dallas Scholarship Circuit (that name may not be 100% right, but if you google Dallas Scholarship Hunter Jumper, I’m sure it will pop up).

Once you have an idea of what part of DFW you’d be in, we can help point you to some barns in that specific area. Not sure where you live know, but we drive…A LOT in Texas. It’s a BIG place! LOL

Oh yes, I have family in Dallas and grew up in Texas- and being in Atlanta now I know all about driving

Husband would be working in Carrollton, and if I am able to transfer I’d be right in downtown. But, I am lobbying he husband to pick a neighborhood to live in in part on where I choose to park Ollie- ha! Since we don’t have kids, we are more flexible.

Buckbranch would be closest to downtown, but if you lived down there DH would have a nasty commute.

Quail Run and others in the Flower Mound/Bartonville/Argyle area would be convenient to Carrollton and a typical commute to downtown. Another barn in that area is Road Runner Farm. But neither of those barns have an indoor/covered. Those in that area with indoors are going to be pushing your budget.

ISE Equine Endeavors (Maggie Kitts) is at a place called Karma Ridge in Parker…it’s just a mile or so from South Fork (you know, JR and gang). Living in that area (basically East Plano) both of you would have roughly the same commute. It does have an indoor.

The other area that would be roughly equal commutes would be Irving/Grand Prairie/Mid-Cities, but I can’t really think of any eventing barns off the top of my head.

I’m ok driving 45ish minutes to the barn- that’s what I do now. I will check these all out- thanks y’all!

Does Mike Huber take students below Novice now? I know that years ago he did not, but that could have changed.

Can y’all tell me about Quail Run’s facilities? I’m waiting to hear back from them.

Well, Quail Run doesn’t have any openings… wah-wah. I am going to take a look at Buckbranch.

So if I lived in the Coppell area, PF Flyers wouldn’t be an outrageous drive, right? 45-ish minutes?

Rose hill stables up in Anna is wonderful! Great people and many laid back people who are in it for fun without drama! They have a beautiful XC course through novice and some training fences out there. Two huge stadium courses and dressage arena. Also a covered arena. Board is the best I found in the DFW metroplex for all that you get. I just moved down here is August, so I know exactly what you’re going through! Felicia does lessons and we also have quite a few other trainers come into teach. We had Dom schramm come last fall as well. I HIGHLY recommend you take a look at them. Good luck in your search!

Rose Hill looks lovely- but gosh, that seems so far out! Where do you live, and how long does it take you to drive there?

Becky and Rebecca Brown are THE BEST. Great environment very close easy south Dallas commute. These are wonderful people. Great group!!!

Mike does have some BN and N riders/horses now. In fact at the awards ceremony in January, he won a BN rider year-end award. You know we all had fun with that! LOL I believe we were standing in on our chairs giving him a standing “O”!

Buckbranch would be an easy commute from work, but a bit of a haul from Coppell. If that’s the area you’re looking at, then 45 min. from home would be about right for PF Flyers (though all bets are off during any traffic hours). The Flower Mound barns would be closer, as would Kadi’s barn in Keller. There should be some barns around Southlake which would be decent.

Closest big barn to Coppell would be Las Colinas Equestrian Center. H/J and dressage trainers there. Used to be an event there with XC in the city park adjoining.

Check out the North Texas Eventing website for member barns.

Again, if you have a trailer to haul for lessons some, there are lots of barns, especially H/J barns in the Flower Mound/Argyle area…some fancy, some not.

Kind of irrelevant since his board/training is way over what the OP wants to pay;)

Take a look at http://www.dentoncreekfarms.com/ footing is great, lots of cc and stadium jumps, but no indoor. Lori hosts several clinics throughout the year. Fairly easy commute from Carrollton…

Please feel free to check us out…Whispering Farms in Prosper. You get a choice of trainers, me (Chrissy Kenyon or Chrissy Allison, depending on how far back we go, married or not…) or Ashley Bearden, both of us are Area V trainers. I have a smaller client base (by choice, I kind of decided I was tired of the drama so I work at another job as well) and teach in the evenings; Ashley does both dressage and combined training. We have a great facility with a GINORMOUS indoor, complete with Big Ass fans (they are a lifesaver in our heat. Our outdoor is getting an overhaul, and we are in the process of adding eurofelt to our indoor. We have private and group turnout, and the care is excellent. The facility is in Prosper…I live in Frisco at the moment but I work in Dallas…It is not a bad drive up there up the Tollway. I work in Dallas at SMU and am actually going to move back to Dallas. Both Ashley and I are happy to help riders at all levels…I kind of do the silly, difficult horses (I am not sure how I got THAT job) … the unique thing about our barn is that all of us get along. It is a drama free barn. As trainers, we don’t snipe about each other EVER, and no matter how busy the arena is, we make room for each other. Granted, it is a big arena, but even if we had to share a small space none of us would begrudge the other. It is a very supportive enviornment.
Having said that, I know all the other barns mentioned here and they are all very nice as well. Buckbranch is NOT a bad drive from Dallas (I actually helped on the design on that barn and I taught there for about 2 years) and Becky is an old friend of mine. They have a LOT of kiddos down there! Both she and Rebecca have a great program. Flower Mound/Argyle is a hideous drive because of I-35/407 but if you are going to go midday you would be ok. Anything in Ft. Worth or west side is going to be a bit tricky time/traffic wise, I would think. There are some great trainers and barns in D/FW, so visit. You are always welcome at Whispering Farms to come and walk around and talk to us!
