Dallas Eventing Barns

I recently posted about looking to move to Charleston or Southern Pines. Unfortunately, both are a no-go now that my fiancé has to move to Dallas for work.

So I am now looking for recommendations in Dallas. We will be living in downtown Dallas near the Dallas Art Tower (I’m not from Dallas, but that is the best marker I have).

I am kind of unsure what the boarding landscape is for eventers.

What eventers are in the area, and what is boarding like? What about local recognized events? Is it better to keep the horses with H/J barns and go to events on my own? My last resort would be keeping my horses in Aiken and flying back and forth since Augusta has a direct flight, which would be a lot, so I am trying to avoid it.

I don’t know personally because I am not in TX but you might start here for some info. https://ntea44.wildapricot.org/

Thank you

Is Dallas a long term commitment for your fiance? Would you consider staying in Aiken with your horses and having a commuter relationship? No way would I want to live in TX long term.

It’s for only a year and a half max. Unfortunately though, I don’t think he wants to pay for a rental property in Aiken since his company is covering our rent in Dallas.

If he is living for free in Dallas that makes staying in Aiken all the more attractive to me, but I understand not everyone would feel that way. At least you don’t have to be there indefinitely.

might just commute back and forth, for a decade I commuted to Los Angeles rather than move there

There is a North Texas Eventing Assocition
North Texas Eventing Association
Lauren Foster

Forney, TX

Forney is just east of Dallas. If you contact them, they can probably tell you about the local Evnting community

I grew up in Texas in the Eventing scene. And it was a great place to event in your young rider years. But there isn’t much of a scene left most of the events have either closed or the farms have been sold.

I would recommend Rebecca Brown who is in Dallas, and I think it’s Lauren Lambert is in Dallas or the flower mound area

What level of eventing do you do? Do you want a high-level program? Both of the above have higher level programs.

If you’re just wanting a trainer in general, there are other lower level trainers there as well

But really, the only events left in that area are Texas Rose, Meadow Creek, Pine Hill, - Greenwood, Holly hill which I think only runs schooling shows.

Many of the upper level riders travel to the East Coast to compete

I had the option to move back there from Aiken A few years ago, and didn’t do it. Eventing community is dying out.

Being close to I-20, especially on the east side of Dallas, is a help as it is a roadway to many things eventing. East of TX as well as in TX.

As mentioned in an above post, this is a very good resource … https://ntea44.wildapricot.org/

Look at the “Business Directory” page for the list of active farms. And/or scroll down the home page to see the sponsors.

It’s Area V, and you’ll want to check out their website as well.

If things are as they were years ago, there is a very nice unrecognized horse trials scene in North TX. And clinics.

If you don’t mind driving a bit, there are more unrecognized horse trials in the larger area around Austin - San Antonio. Some of these are 3 to 4 hour drive from DFW. But it does expand the eventing things to do. https://sites.google.com/view/cteventing

I would suggest joining several FB groups - Area V Eventing Forum, and TSN - Texas Sporthorse Network, for starters, and ask about boarding and trainers there. I am in TX but down near Houston and don’t really know much about the scene in the DFW area, other than to say avoid Ellen Doughty-Hume and Pegasus Eventing (or whatever name(s) she does business under now).

Willow Draw and TX Rose are the venues with recognized HTs closest to DFW, the rest are down towards Houston (and one in Louisiana!).

There are several eventing type facilities right in the DFW area, in addition to Willow Draw and Texas Rose. They offer unrecognized horse trials on a regular basis. Several are near I-20 making them relatively easy to access.

The NTEA calendar gives a more accurate picture of what there is to do through the year:
https://ntea44.wildapricot.org/page-1660870

Curragh has several unrecognized prep horse trials per year, boarding, training, teaching, etc. Just south of Ft Worth.

Quail Run also does unrecognized horse trials and is just north of Ft Worth.

Willow Draw is just west of FT Worth (detecting a theme surrounding Ft Worth) and has recognized horse trials, clinics, etc.

There are any number of trainer barns with eventing focus in the DFW area.

Meadowcreek is about the same distance from the center of DFW as is Texas Rose. They do recognized horse trials, schooling days, etc.

There are more eventing opportunities that are a bit farther than these.
