Dandruff on horse tail

Hi, my horse has these last days a lot of dandruff on his tail, it started a week ago, his Bone tail had a kind of oily stuff coming out of the skin but after it started to be flakey and now hé s looking some hair. He s not itchy AT all. Somebody knows what it could be and which treatment would be the best? I ll post some pics, tia.

The first thing I go to is dandruff shampoo and take it from there. Soap it up well and let it sit for a couple of minutes before rinsing. Did you check underneath his tail? He could be rubbing the tail (and your not seeing it) because he need a cleaning under there.

That bald spot means he’s rubbing.

His sheath may need to be cleaned.

Or his anus cleaned/wiped with a baby wipe.

I load mine up with MTG because I know she tolerates it but alternatively I use a combo of castor and vitamin e oil. Lather it in. Next day or two days later shampoo with head and shoulders. It’s always worked well for me. I make sure to really get the dock and entire anatomy super clean and then meticulously rinsed.

Funny, mine suddenly has that, where he hasn’t the prior 18 months and his diet has been the same.

We did sheath clean, clean anus, no change. We did antihistamines (vet recommended), no change.

I am now washing with antifungal shampoo and MTG, no change (but have only done it twice now)

I haven’t tried an anti-dandruff shampo. That will be next, along with adding some coconut oil or other moisturizer.

All ears for any other suggestions

My horse rubs his tail every year starting around when his spring allergies kick in. I keep him on Zyrtec to control the allergies. However, this year it got really bad in just a few days’ time, and he was rubbing his tail completely raw. Sheath cleaning and washing did nothing. My vet prescribed this:
Gentamicin / Betamethasone (Generic) Topical Spray for Dogs, 120-mL:

It stopped the itching and rubbing pretty quickly. I’m still not sure what the real cause was, but I haven’t had any additional problems yet (increased his Zyrtec). Now to get his beautiful tail to grow back…

Have you tried a tar based dandruff shampoo for dermatitis?

I used a chlorexidine shampoo and is getting better, horse is not itchy AT all, hé does not rub his tail at all
