Can someone post the video please? My FB is in an uproar and I’m not sure which side to be indignant on yet
Go on Daniel Coyle Showjumper FB page its the first post
Technically, the horse did not pass in-between the flags. The right front leg was outside of the red flag. Of course the ground jury has their own opinions. In eventing we have known fence types where there is a risk of something similar happening and the jump judges must video those jumps such that the ground jury can review and render judgement.
That was interesting. And a little unfortunate. It was very slick until then!

Looks to me like right leg outside flag. No video review in jumpers though?
That is correct. Video review is not allowed in jumpers
Just telling you what I was told at the jumper judges clinic. Also this was FEI?
apparently no one protested the results. The head on video was sent to me this morning. He did not jump inside the flags
There is a difference between video review being “permitted” and “required”.
No, this was not an FEI week at WEC. It was one of the regular $100k National Standard classes.
It’s still incredible to think how much the prize money has increased over the years. I can remember when $100,000 was a LOT of prize money in a Grand Prix.
Watching the video in stop frame mode it is clear to me that he jumped outside the red flag.
The height of the jump (between the flagged area) was also not lowered, which may have had an impact on how it was viewed by the judges.
This is what I was going to say.
It’s like when someone drops a middle pole.
The height wasn’t changed, so there is no penalty.
It’s been a long time since I’ve looked at the rule book, so maybe someone that has can chime in.
But has there ever been a “must jump between flags” rule?
I always thought they were there as a guidance/marker for which way the fence was jumped.
Not as some sort of penalty like in XC.
Jumper rule 145 a said knocking down the standard is 4 faults. No flag needed.
Per jumper rule 139.2, the horse has been considered to have a runout if it doesn’t jump between the markers of the fence, hence flags.
Interesting, watching the video on his FB page I would say no WAY did he jump the obstacle. The horse ran out, and crashed through the standard during his run out. BUT I understand the jury had a different view, and it could have looked vastly different from say, the side. I think it’s very interesting that no one in the class itself has protested (in fact, Sharn posted something to the contrary on his FB this morning.)
Reminds me a little of the KMP clinic on the other thread, everyone online up in arms yet the actual riders involved stay silent…
I saw the Sharn posts as well.
I’m pretty sure Daniel was 1 & 2, so he took the big check either way. Yes - others would have gotten some more money, moving up one hole each, but it doesn’t seem like anyone in the class actually cared. Just people online.
