Dark Colored Scrims

I’m shopping new scrims and have to say that the darker colors worry me for being too hot to show with in the middle of the summer… what is your experience with darker greys, navys, blacks, etc? Do you find that horses get too hot under them?

I don’t show so I’m asking out of genuine curiosity. How long do the horses stand out in sunlight wearing a scrim on a typical show day?

I have a navy one that I use when I handgraze my mare. She does get a little sweaty under it on the really hot/humid days but it helps a ton with flies. It airy enough and that helps a lot (vs. a fly sheet with a much tighter weave where she would sweat a ton more). I got a really good deal on it and unfortunately they didn’t have any lighter colors which i would prefer.

Not really, they are well ventilated. Also, if you are using them over a saddle while waiting at the ring, they don’t sit down tight and cling on to the horse. You might get a little sweat if handwalking/grazing as ryansgirl said, but even then, I’ve only really found it around the lined shoulders or other bindings, not really under the mesh.

If it’s that hot I opt for some fly spray and leave them naked.
Otherwise I don’t think the colour makes that much of a difference, they are light and well ventilated.

Due to our barn colors, the base color of our show scrims is navy. I have never had a problem with my guy getting hot underneath it and we show in North Carolina and Virginia. Our scrims are very light weight and well ventilated and if it is that hot out, the horses are standing in the shade somewhere. I think the horses appreciate that they help keep flies off as well.
