Darling, Int: new policy on rendering a euthanized horse

I’m sure many of us have used Darling International to pick up a deceased horse. Rendering is just one of their services. As of a month ago they will NO longer picked up horse that was euthanized with barbiturates. The company said the drug was showing up elsewhere down the food chain, no pun intended.

This a big game changer on how horses will be euthanized if you can’t bury or compost the remains on your farm. Yes, a correctly placed bullet does euthanize the horse but seeing it done that way is rougher on the owner.

Plan ahead owners.

What state are you in? There are other companies where I live.

Kansas however they are a national company.

Update: At work today I asked Doc if she had heard about this change in the rendering service pick up and she had not. She understands a correctly placed bullet is humane but it’s not a service she will provide.

Hope everyone one affected by this new policy is working on a back up plan.

The rendering industry has changed so much since 2002. Use to be you could get same day pick up if you phoned in the morning. The company, locally owned at the time, always charged more to pick up horses because they were viewed as companion animals even though at the plant the horses and cattle all went into the same system. Still, if you had an emergency euthanasia by evening the remains were gone.

When Darling Int bought the company, shortly afterwards, they did away with same day pick up and instead offered a couple days of the week they would provide service. That has been painful for some sensitive horse owners who had an emergency euthanasia at home then had to wait 2 or 3 days for the company to pick up the horse.

Now this. A bullet if you need the remains taken off the property. It’s going to take time to develop a list of names of people who will do this on short notice and in advance. I guess there is a business opportunity for someone with land who is willing to pick up a deceased horse and bury it for the owner.

Yes, cremation is an option in our area and it runs $1200 per horse. I do not know the specifics about it though: if ashes are returned it’s $1200 or if it’s no ash return for a lesser fee?? I don’t know.

I have never heard of Darling, what an awful name for a rendering company. Here in Maryland at least cremation is by the pound so varies considerably in price. My horse was a little over $1200, that price was not getting any remains back. It would have been more to get him back, I don’t remember how much more because it wasn’t something I was interested in.

Yes, I have become aware of this … by vets and cremation staff…a fairly recent development.

The cremation companies are now busy .

Yes, ashes can be returned or scattered for you ~

 no need to ask me how I know ~

Darling International does waaaay more than rendering livestock, that’s only a tiny service. I suspect there will be day when they no longer offer the service. It’s probably the name of the company founders but I get your drift.

About 10 years ago they streamlined picking up dead cattle- only cattle 18 months & younger would be taken. The issue was related to Mad Cow disease which appears in cattle from age 2 and up. Those cattle would require testing so it wasn’t worth dealing with.

Update: Another veterinarian shared with Doc a different combination of drugs to use for euthanasia that allow the deceased horse to be rendered.

At work I spoke with the local animal cremation company and they provide pick up & simple cremation for $600. If you want individual cremation with ash return that fee is $1000.
