Dartmouth Eq Recruiting

Does anyone know anything about Dartmouth’s eq team recruiting?

Website says “Can I be recruited for the Varsity Equestrian Team? Yes. Although Equestrian does not have any admission spots, Coach writes recommendations and fills out Talent Ratings forms for those riders that she is interested in supporting”

This is obviously pretty different than other schools. Will riders still be “committing” to this college like normal? What is talent ratings and recommendations?

It seems unusual to me. One of my friends had the full support of the coach who basically guaranteed her a spot on the team and she still did not get in. It was a surprise to us all.

Dartmouth doesn’t have any admission spots for the team, so you can’t be recruited for the team and given a place at Dartmouth simply because you were offered a spot on the team. A student has to first be accepted at Dartmouth on whatever academic/extra-curricular merit gets you accepted at an Ivy these days. The riding coach can and will aid in your application by writing you a recommendation and stating that she would love to have you on the team (if indeed she does), but that is just one part of the student’s overall application and not a guaranteed entry into the college. At least that’s my understanding of how it works.

What @Stayon said. It’s like playing tennis or football - some schools will admit you on your sport performance alone, and you don’t always have to meet any other criteria or compete with academic applicants. This is being “recruited”, technically.

You can be head hunted and encouraged to apply/have recommendations from onsite staff to boost your application, but that doesn’t guarantee admission to the school.

As I understand it, this is how all sports recruiting works at Ivy League schools, even for big sports like football.

I don’t know about Dartmouth, specifically, but it seems that Ivies have 30 admission spots per year for football and then spots for other sports based on some complicated formula. So, theoretically, equestrian could be considered one of those other sports and be given admission spots, but that is not yet the case.
