Davidson Suspended by FEI

I’m sure more than one person will disagree with me, but the anti-doping movement in our sport, while necessary, leaves a lot to be desired. As it is designed now, it’s not as effective as it could be. I digress.

If you’ve never had to file a TUE at the FEI level, don’t be so quick to judge. It’s easy to make a mistake because there isn’t a static process.

I was drug tested five time in one season. Once, they threatened to suspend me because they couldn’t locate my TUE, even when I presented a copy. It was a whole to-do.

probably because WADA is in control of the human drug monitoring whereas FEI stewards TDs and staff are in charge of event violations. WADA is a bigger machine.

Different organizations are responsible for the oversight.

This is ITA/WADA’s decision, not FEI/USEF’s decision.

With covid, reminders for drivers license and car registrations where I live have ceased. As a direct result of this, police have reported that many people are driving around with expired license and vehicle registrations. Seems a bit like the TUE case for Davidson imho.

Would it not have been less work for FEI to send a reminder ? A suspension sounds like a lot of paperwork and approval. Seems punitive on their part to go ahead with the suspension, rather than a reminder. Just my opinion.

I would think it would be pretty easy to have an automated reminder? Obviously, competitors could set reminders as well, but if it’s not a massive logistical hurdle: “Please be advised that your TUE ends effective XXXX, and you will need to refile if you still require the exemption.”

Not FEI purview, it is WADA.

Then same question to WADA.

Edit to add, FEI did the actual suspension, so I guess you might say FEI & WADA.

It is also making a resurgence in older adults for alertness and to counter some sedative effects of some meds. See folks in their 60’s and 70’s come thru on it.

Thank you for the reminder to check those things!

On the topic of reminder from the governing body versus - he should know this stuff and remember.

I think the whole vehicle registration thing hits the nail on the head.

If a person is used to a system that sends them a reminder about this stuff, they know that they can wait until the reminder to worry about it.
If the place that the reminders come from randomly stops sending them, then the system has changed and the person does not know it. They do not know that it is now on them to remember without the reminder.

I am one of those people who depends on my dentist office calling me a couple of days before my twice year cleaning so I don’t forget to go.
Yes, I have it on my calendar. I put it there immediately when I get the appointment six months before the appointment. So I am not that likely to not show at all. But that call makes me look ahead and notice.

So good to see. Under the circumstances everyone seemed to agree on, it only seemed logical that a suspension was far too harsh a penalty, but we all know that rules and common sense don’t always go hand-in-hand. Nice to see the system working, and as Buck said, credit to the organization where it is due for moving quickly on this.

Still really sucks that he had to miss competing and coaching at Bromont though!

The process worked. Suspension, suspension lifted swiftly due to circumstances, and everyone can move on. It also serves as a good reminder to ensure that all paperwork is in order. I am sure that this is something that Buck will ensure won’t happen again.

It might sound harsh to suspend first, but I’m OK with it. The system is there for a reason. And in this case, the process worked and all is well. And hopefully it will be a good reminder to all that they need to be on top of their TUEs. WADA doesn’t play around.

Regardless, I like Buck and I’m happy he can move forward from this.

It is too bad, but at least it didn’t take a year to decide (which was understandable under the circumstances) as it did with the other USEF members that “didn’t realize” that they needed a TUE in the first place.

I’m happy for him that his honest mistake was cleared up quickly.
