After using rotational worming every 8 weeks for many years we have switched to 2x/year and fecal test as recommended by the vets. Now for the first time we have a bunch of horses rubbing their tails and one who actually drops pin worms. Pin worms don’t show on fecals and apparently they can’t be controlled with the twice yearly wormer most of the horses here require. What is the best thing for pinworms in horses who are managed with twice yearly wormer and never have a positive fecal test?
My vet had me use the wormer rectally for a number of days. I forgot which wormer and how may days, (aks your vet). but it worked. I put about and inch of wormer on my gloved finger and inserted it while my mare ate her dinner!
Sometimes you have to end up doing double pyrantel pamoate (aka Strongid paste) every 2-4 weeks for 4-5-6 treatments to get them under control. Adding in a dose of oxibendazole (Anthelcide) can help boost the effectiveness as a combo, over each separately.
Topical/rectal application of ivermectin wouldn’t hurt either.
i went through the same and went back to more frequent wormings. Also helps to make sure and shampoo under the tail and around their bum.
How timely. I had casually observed one mare rubbing her tail a lot, another one to a lesser extent. I searched their tails for ticks & found nothing. Two weeks ago I spotted a pin worm on one of my horses rectum. My vet said 3 days of a double dose of Panacur was the recommendation to treat. I said heck, I’ll just do the entire Power Pack and be done with it so all 3 of mine were power packed. The tail rubbing has stopped.
