Dean Martin's Andulusians

I never knew he had horses. Lots for some to nitpick in this short video, but still. Beautiful horses.

I didn’t even know he had horses, let alone Andalusians. Nice video. I wonder when this was filmed?

Reading through the comments, it was a 1977 Christmas Special. 41 years ago. Seems like yesterday.

At that time, Andalusians were rare in the USA.

They were Garrison Ranch’s horses, and, as Bluey said, extremely rare in the US at that time.

my goodness – how did I not know this:)

I think Dean Martin passed away poor, alone, in some shabby apartment. Where did all of this go:(

No nit picking from me — he could ride — there’s not much air between him and the saddle — how a horse should be ridden IMO and it’s obvious he loved those horses:)

Thanks, @allons-y !
I would have never thought of him as a rider or horseman, but Color Me Wrong!

@walkinthewalk : Wikipedia says he died of lung cancer in his Beverly Hills home - so probably not impoverished.

The only nit I want to pick is the bit about Andalusians all turning white.
Plenty bays at the Spanish breeding/training farm I was at…
Maybe confused with Lippizaners?

About that footage;

[h=2]Vintage US Andalusian Footage[/h]
Do you ever wish you could peek back in time and see what things were like in the Andalusian community almost half a century ago? Take a look at this precious footage of horses at Garrison Ranch, narrated by Dean Martin on one of his many visits to the ranch. [h=2]A few details about the horses in the clip[/h]
Before Spain and Portugal parted ways and began sequestering and marketing their horses separately, IALHA was formed and registered S/P horses for what they were in both motherlands at the time, and for centuries prior; purebreds. Today this still holds true by IALHA’s rules, though it is perhaps a lesser known fact of life that the bloodlines are only recently separated within the PRE and PSL communities.

Regardless, here is a valuable and fleeting glimpse back in time at some of the finest horses ever imported from Spain by the Garrison Ranch. The S/P mares and foals pictured at the beginning were some of the first, and finest horses to be bred in the US, at a time when bullfighting Portuguese horses were crossed to Cartujano stallions on a regular basis to produce exceptional Andalusian horses. Pictured is Legionario III, an Isabel Terry-bred Champion of Spain imported by the Garrison Ranch, and possibly one of the most famous Andalusian horses of our time. He appears in many, many pedigrees today in both Spain, Portugal, and the US. A pure Cartujano, Legionario III was also the first Andalusian Breyer Horse. Also pictured is his son Leopardo II, a US National Champion bred by the Garrison Ranch.

The Isabel Terry Stud is now a National Monument in Spain, and has doubtlessly contributed more to the overall quality and superiority of the breed as a whole than virtually any other stud farm in the last 200 years. A Terry branded horse can be found at the foundation of most well established and successful programs in both Spain and the US.

Very nice. Beautiful horses. So, did Dean Martin OWN horses? He certainly did have a good seat, as Walkinthewalk mentioned.

He was in quite a few western movies over the years, and looked good on a horse.

He probably was sad at the end, because his son died in a fighter jet crash during his military service. Dean Paul Martin (a son from the second, longest lasting marriage) had been married to Dorothy Hamill, the figure skater.

He was married three times, and had four children with his first wife, and after they divorced he had full custody of the kids. At that time it was uncommon for the father to get full custody, and that wife died in obscurity, so I guess that’s where the story about him being impoverished came from. He was actually very wealthy.

Here’s the link to another clip of Lorne Greene and Dean Martin with some horses that aren’t cooperating on Dean Martin’s show:

Thanks, allons-y. I had NO idea that Dean Martin was into horses or that he had Andalusians. You see a lot of that generation of actors appear in an occasional Western and many look very comfortable on a horse. Dean Martin looked like he knew what he was doing.

Very cool. I’ve always heard that he was an especially nice man and that his heavy-drinking image was just a stage persona and not at all how he was in real life.

Because of this thread, I continued watching Youtube videos of Dean Martin. This one is really funny (be patient, you younger generation, let it roll over you, give it time, and you will enjoy it*), and there is an amusing banter about measuring horses starting around 11:20.

Carson: Where do they measure the horse from, the top of the head…?

Martin: From the pool room! Where the hell do you think…? …from the ground that they’re standing on!

  • Back in the day, you never saw on T.V. the profanity or even vulgarity that is common today, so when someone would say something on a talk show which would get bleeped, it was unusual and pretty shocking. Or especially funny.

I did the same thing last night! LOL I found a funny video of him with Lorne Greene where the horses just weren’t cooperating. I thought it was hilarious, but for the younger generation unfamiliar with Bonanza might not get it.

EDITED TO ADD: Sorry, I somehow missed that @JanM had already posted this link earlier. Whoops!

Why are people saying he had a nice seat ?

Thanks for those videos. Cheered me up on a dreary day.
