Deaths at BLM facility in Colorado

I have read several articles the last two days about a number of deaths at the BLM holding pens in Fremont Co. in Colorado. The articles don’t say much specific, just the disease is highly contagious and often is deadly. I am neurotic enough for this to keep me (in NC) awake at night.

Anybody know more about what’s going on?

Maybe call the state veterinarian’s office and see if there is any official word?

Some info here.

I had a bad experience with a person who was contracted to hold BLM horses and burros. She lost a bunch of Forest Service horses (not BLM) to salmonella suddenly and devastatingly. She failed to properly clean her facility and BLM animals held there next also contacted the disease. No one was told what happened. We adopted two burros and then lost them to salmonella. They were doing so well. It was heartbreaking. My mare also got sick and was hospitalized for five days. We had to go through sanitation procedures and quarantine for my mare when she returned from the hospital. It was awful. I will guess that’s what killed these horses as well.

Regardless of how you feel about BLM animals, this is a horrible way to die. No horse or burro deserves this death.

I would like to see more transparency from the BLM. This was a highly disputed round up. Not a good outcome.

Peggy-that’s one of the articles I read, and there isn’t much real info in it. Nothing about symptoms, how the horse is affected, nothing like that. A little knowledge would be useful.

If the vets really don’t know what it is, that’s really scary.

Agree that it would be nice to know more about what disease or how it progresses.

That’s why I used “some” as a qualifier.

I’m so glad I’m wrong.

I wonder how much immunity the equine flu vaccine has on this strain? It sounds like a new strain. Hopefully, it covers it.
