I have a 14 hand welsh/wb mare I’m planning to breed. Her sire is 12.2 hands, dam is 15 hands and dam sire is 16.2 hands. I’m aiming for the baby to be a large pony and I don’t know what size stallion would give the best chance at that . I’d rather get a medium than an oversized foal, does anyone have much experience in this that can give some insite? Much appreciated!
If it were me and I really wanted to stay within the pony size range, I would look at purebred welsh stallions. You didn’t say what discipline/job you were producing for but I assume hunter. If that’s the case I would focus on a Welsh section B who isn’t larger than a medium (and has a lot of get on the ground to give you an idea of what size they produce when bred to ‘x’ mare). There’s likely a section B or two who’ve been bred to a TB or warmblood mare to give you some reference.
Yes, hunter pony. This was my initial thought, a 13.2 hand welsh. Thanks for your input.
I’d think of going for purebred Welsh, possibly a B, because there is height in the mares genes with the WB. Can’t go wrong with a nice Welsh pony. An Arab/Welsh cross is popular in the UK but less common, I think, in the USA.
