DEET on the dog?

Specifically, Cutter brand insect repellent - if I can use a DEET product on a dog, I’d prefer Cutter because it does not leave greasy residue.

I’m asking because the mosquitoes and gnats will NOT leave my dogs’ heads alone! They shake, shake, shake their heads constantly while we’re out on walks. It can’t be much fun for them, not to mention I’d rather not end up with aural hematomas.

*Of course I wouldn’t spray directly on their heads - into my palms and then rub into fur and on ears.

I would try rubbing a dryer sheet on the dogs head instead of Deet. I have heard wonder stories about combatting gnats with one stuck in the headband. That or the usual Skin so Soft although you might find that too greasy. It works very well for gnats I have found and is certainly safe to use. I would be real careful about Deet around the eye tissues.

I wouldn’t put DEET on a head of any creature- there have been scattered reports of DEET-on-head causing seizures.

You could try putting citronella or a citronella-based horse type fly spray on their heads.

Thanks!

I’ll definitely give the dryer sheet a try - maybe rub their heads with it and then tuck it into the collar like a bandanna. . .

Let us know how that works–I use an all natural citronella horse spray lightly on my bunch and it works pretty well…

Gnats have been awful this year. I think I’m going to rub a dryer sheet on MY head and see if it works!

The gnats AND the mosquitoes both! And the only reason I’m not getting drained of blood by the mosquitoes is because they seem to find my poor dogs to be tastier morsels.

So, I guess it will be DEET on myself and Bounce on the dogs!

I thought of this thread and my forgotten dryer sheet as I was swatting the gnats tonight…

<off to put some in the car now>

DEET is very high toxic so they use it to kill things! If you have not infiltrated your system through your dogs skin, it is possible that he ingested only things down in her bed perhaps by the head and legs, then maybe licking her lips or legs.
