Define 'Heavy Hunter' for me?!
My Irish horse (from across the pond) has got the extend and gallop on request down pat. Come back in a mannerly way… well…he gets a bit sprightly. Cursing has no effect on him. And least not American curse words. Perhaps that’s the problem. I don’t have the Irish.
I have found that rapidity and not so much dialect seems to work as well;)

Then you should come visit the Dublin Horse Show in August!! You would LOVE it!

I’ve got a lead on a gelding that is about 15.1hh… His seller almost has me convinced that Fjords are like potato chips, you can’t have just one.

I went to Hickstead last year and was entranced by the Heavy Hunter classes, and also loved the Maxi Cob classes. I will have to see if I can schedule my work travels to correspond to being in Dublin in August.

I’m in love with these heavy hunters. A new horse in not in the picture for me now, but I can add one to my “fantasy hunter team”. It would be a big change from my 14.1 pony!

I think when the Farrier charges extra for the big shoes

that is a great picture !

I’ve got one too - and the farrier bills to prove it. A few weeks after I got him I gave in and bought a 3 step mounting block. He’s 17.2h. Those who need a mounting block should not fall off in a hayfield.

love those high whites!! :>

See this is my girl www.photobucket.com/clydeXmare

Based on the bone, height etc she is certainly a heavy hunter then! I just LOVE all the pics, why is it that the UK gets all the fun classes? Why aren’t heavy hunters and cobs more show worthy here? If frustrates me, cause I love me a stocky pony, even when the pony hits 17hh  It would be nice to have more venues to show off our classy cobs and imposing hunters!

Heavyweight hunter land

is Ireland. The Irish Draught Horse is the usual suspect in heavyweight hunter classes and as they have a range of size they can be the champion of the Heavyweight Cob class, maxi cob class, and the Heavyweight Hunter all in one show. The Cob division is 15.1 and under the new Maxi Cob division is over 15.1 and the Heavyweight Hunter is over the Maxi Cobs. Usually these are Irish Draughts of traditional type with very good bone and top movement with superb canters and gallops. They are required to gallop in class and they do gallop not like the American hunters. It is a great thundering. The American shows would be very smart to begin showing all these under saddle classes again as they are loosing the majority of their hunter peeps as they decide they don’t want to jump so much any more. They go to dressage now but if they increased the range of under saddle classes they could keep these people around. Good business and fun too as it is a lot about fashion and turn out as well as a fun gallop in the ring. PatO

OK. So I have a half-RID mare who is 15.2hh but very heavy boned. Probably weighs 1450-1500. Would she fall into the Heavy Hunter or the Maxi Cob? I’m confused…

Wow, these horses are gorgeous! I know nothing about hunting (besides what I’ve read in the Rita Mae Brown books :D), but this forum is great eye candy!

I really love those heavy hunters. They look regal.

I am a TB addict that had her heart stolen by a heavy hunter…check out my profile picture… Schultz has hunted 4 seasons and I am hoping to event him this year

I have a pmu gelding whose sire was a percheron/paint and mom was what looked like a fjord cross. He looks like a fjord but in the past year has grown more than 2 inches. (He was just 14’3 when I bought him and is now a tad over 15’1.) He is butt high and getting deeper in the girthline and broader through the chest. He is not quite 7 and I think we are heading toward 15’3. There goes the pony I thought my grandkids were going to learn to ride on.:sigh:

Maxi Cob. She is slightly too tall to be a traditional cob and much too small to be a heavy hunter.

I have put a photo of my old heavy hunter in my profile to give you an idea of an irish show heavy hunter. He was well placed in Dublin.

Gosh, I wonder if Diamond White is related to my guy, Diamond Drop? I would say my fella is a true heavy hunter:
