Define 'Heavy Hunter' for me?!
Gorgeous boy!! How is he bred?
You must have fun keeping him clean! :D
Thanks Napoles - he is by Rockrimmon Silver Diamond (Sillot Hill X Saggart’s Millie) and out of Pearl Drop (Castana X Castleduff Silver) - all RID and sire is from the King of Diamond’s line. Both parents are from Ireland and the dam hunted there. Rockrimmon was returned to Ireland after the death of the breeder here in the USA - he donated him back to Ireland. My guy is a typical RID - great temperament and a really nice mover.

As for keeping him white - it’s handy having a racehorse trainer for a husband. He gives great show-morning baths lol!

Ah I remember Horse Sport Ireland reporting on Rockrimmon coming back here. Your boy is vaguely related to one of mine who is by a little known Clover Hill stallion called Mick Coevers and out of a Sillot Hill mare.

Wow! Some gorgeous looking horses in this thread! I am stunned at how elegant and refined these big horses can be. Very glad I decided to check this thread out!

PS- I couldn’t help but to notice how “petite” these heavy hunters made their riders look!

I ride one!

Mojo!

Here is my big boy, Mojo. ISH, Glenlara was his daddy, out of a Percheron/TB mare. Yup, size 6 shoes, yup, ya pay extra for that. Yup, needed some new tack, but I probably would have anyway. It’s all good. He know where every inch of his body is, and everyone has this experience with him: after 10 minutes, you forget he is big, because he is trustworthy.
He is the reason I still ride. 'nuff said.

When I think heavy hunter, I think draft or draft cross. Big, solid, with lots of bone in the leg and large hooves. Something that could carry a heavy and/or big/tall man. Maybe not necessarily 17.2 hands, maybe even 15.2 if it were really heavy in the body, but with lots of bone and thickness. A good sensible draft mind too. I think of an Irish Draught when I think of a heavy hunter.

Tamara- breeding the heavy hunter here in the US would be FANTASTIC. Along with classes for heavy hunters and cobs, like in Europe (Ireland?). I guess the ID breeders are technically doing heavyweight hunters, but some other variety would be nice.

I think the specifications someone gave in one of those first couple posts were more for a hunter being shown in classes in Europe. But as far as in America for foxhunting, I think something drafty with a lot of bone would be okay to be considered a heavy weight hunter.

Some really stunning horses on this thread! I adore my TB’s, but would LOVE to have a sensible heavy hunter to take out, well, hunting!

You guys are AWFUL, showing all these pics of lovely big horses. I’ve always pined for an Irish draught, and now I’m looking at them on line.

When I win powerball, I’m buying this guy:

Of course, I’ll have to climb on my pony to mount him

Ohhh, Hinderella - He’s a cutey - Gittem!

I can’t believe I did it, again… Last month I bought a lovely 7 year old failed polo pony as a hopeful foxhunter. So far, her training is coming along quite nicely, and I hope to have her out before the season is over. Super nice mare, just didn’t feel like chasing the ball as it kept coming back!

A couple of weeks ago, a friend posted a photo on facebook of an adorable Irish Draught mare for sale in Iowa… I’m in NJ, it’s winter, and I don’t have a spare stall (at least I won’t when my broodmare comes home in a month or so). I kept going back and drooling over this lovely 9 yr. old, dappled grey ID mare and couldn’t help dreaming about her. Out of the blue, my husband looked over at me staring at her photo on my computer screen and said to me “If you want her so much, why don’t you just figure it out and buy her”. I guess I got an early Valentine’s present. She arrived last week! I’m in LOVE, LOVE, LOVE. I shouldn’t have, but I’m so very glad I did.

What a sweet, sweet willing mare. I can’t wait to post pics of my new heavy weight hunter!!!

Here’s a link to the photo that drew me in (I added it to my website) http://www.pleasantmeadowfarm.com/news.cfm

(PS - in the short time she’s been under saddle - she has been out hunting in IA on several occasions!) Unfortunately though she’s been out of work as she just had a foal in July…

I want to play!

here’s mine. Purebred Irish draught by Touch of the Blues out of Winmaur Vera Too . He is 12 this year and a very solid citizen. He has done dressage ( schooling second but only competed thru 1st) , novice level eventing, and combined driving, hunter pacing… just a good guy.

OMG, she’s beautiful!! Congratulations!

By the way - unfortunately due to blockers on my computers, I can’t see any photos that are hosted on the likes of photobuckets, petshots, flickr etc, so please don’t anybody think I am being ignorant about not commenting on their photos.

IDTOGO - We need to find a venue to show off our Heavy Hunters!

What a handsome and versatile boy!

Versatile indeed! Wow, how tall is he? You must have mile-long legs.

He’s a peanut at 16 hands. I bought him as a yearling and was able to bring him on myself with good help on the ground. Super Ammy friendly and practically born broke !

USEF definition of Heavyweight Hunter was —up to carrying 205 lbs.

OMG you all. I’ve drooled over IDs for years but as a jumper person never thought that combo would work too well  Now that I’ve become interested in hunting… must. sit. on. hands.

Thanks for the eye candy

I have ALWAYS loved the British HOY type classes and the horses - ESPECIALLY the Heavyweight Hunters, Cobs and Maxi Cobs.

I also love all the variety of other classes…even “Hack” for what we call “hony-sized horses”

It just seems that it would be soooo fun to have shows like this here in the USA and CAN. I love how much attention is given to proper turnout. The attire, the tack, the grooming, everything!

Loving all these pics of heavyweight hunters  What a great thread.

It really is too bad this didn’t take hold here in North America. Seems the UK style of showing (plus Australia/New Zealand) is just soooo fun and full of so much eye candy and a variety of classes for all types. I even love the blingy-browbands you see in some classes (hehehheee)

idtogo, that is a perfect size! I love stocky but I find 17hh can be a bit bigger than I like, and I start to look like a peanut up there. I rode a 17.3hh warmblood for some jumper work and omg did I look silly up there!

I love love love this thread. I fell in love with draft crosses at Waredaca many years ago where a girl owned a big Clyde/TB named Big Mac. My equitation trainer’s Lily (TB/Perch), even at age 18 just solidified it for me. She hunted with Lily. Galloping her is like driving my Tahoe; you just have no idea how fast you’re going because it is so comfortable!
