I have a question for those who may know, wasn’t sure where to post this. The Horse Country store in Warrenton is going to have the president of the Dehner Boot store there taking measurements. My question is, are they good boots? How much are they? Are they worth the money you pay for them?

Reason being, is I have big feet, tall that I am I was cursed. I got a nice pair of black riding boots but the calf was a bit snug so I took it to Skeeter and told him exactly what I wanted, and did he do it? No, he ruined my boots and then when I commented on how they now fit, he said he did the best that he could and what more did I expect?

So, I want a good pair of riding boots. Not ones that rub behind my knees now, that gap open so much I can fit my hand down my leg easily, that you can tell look bigger and I have to wear them with nylons so they now do rub. sigh I will pay for good boots that will last me.

I’ve had four pairs of custom made Dehners over the last 25 years and am still using three of them. They are very well made. Good measurements are key and I’d say you would be in good hands. My last two pair came in just under $900 each. You get to choose from many options, including what type of leather you want so the costs vary. The Dehner website spells out all the options and their associated costs. If you can afford it I would also spring for the custom carved boot trees. They are $$$$ ($600 a pair) but they are what have kept my boots in great shape all these years.

Dehner boots, if measured correctly, will fit you very well, and if you take care of them, can last for 20+ years. I have a pair that is at least 20 years old (I bought them used), and they are excellent, if getting a tad worn. I’m seriously considering getting a custom pair done, as mine aren’t quite tall enough for me, and it would be nice to have an extra 1.5" or so in height and removable patent tops on them.

A pair of dress boots should be around $850-950, IIRC.

Dehners are fabulous. I have a pair of 15 year old cuff lined dress boots and they are just now starting to show some wear.

On eBay last week I bought a pair of custom Dehner, fully lined, black patent leather top, dress boots for $50!!! It was the eBay buy of a lifetime and they fit perfectly!!!

I just got my second pair of Dehners today!

My first pair are dress boots, with back zippers. I probably should have gone with front zippers, but they fit beautifully…and the zipper did break at 18 months, when I had way too many layers on and zipped them up.

So, since they fit perfectly, and Dehner is having a sale ($150 off factory orders), I ordered a pair of field boots, fully lined, calf skin with a gusset at the top, no zippers asking them to use my old measurements, but adding 1/4" in the calf since I’ve been jogging and also like underarmour in winter.

But, it is all in the measuring. I have a friend who is still not happy with the fit of hers after 2 trips back to the factory. Both of mine fit perfectly, although they ALL rub at the back of the knee until they break in. I currently have small rubs on my ankles from wearing the new ones while I cooked dinner (after oiling and working the lining, and then walking in the rain soaked grass).

I love my Dehners. They are worth every penny. Just got a new hunt specific pair with patent tops. They are fully lined with the insulated foot. They fit perfectly and I have no rubs from them. Just did my third hunt in them 3 1/2 hours and they felt great.

My original pair is 20+ years old. They are a little thin on the inside of the calf. They have survived many rain storms and other things. They are wonderful.

I also got a pair of dressage specific Dehners a couple of years ago. They are full lined and I am keeping them out of the brush to keep them nice.

I got calfskin full lined, composition sole, elastic gusset. I have the Spanish tops. I think the Italian tops don’t look proper out foxhunting.

Highly recommend getting the gusset. Don’t recommend zippers. The do shorten the expected life of your boot.

A pair of Dehners will easily last you 20+ years. When you look at the cost, they are cheaper than most other brands. Plus they will service them forever. I’ve had mine resoled and other work done over the years.

They are the most comfortable boots and look great.

Nevermind - I found it on the Dehner website (and agree with PW, 2.5 inches is entirely too much for the hunt field!).

Also visited the Vogel website and noticed they too are offering a sale through the end of April (15% off).

I feel for you. I wear a 14. Have two pairs of Dehners that I am very happy with. I agree, the gussets are nice. Mine were measured by a very experienced person and were perfect.

Another yay for Dehner’s. Mine from 18 years old (25 years ago) are still going strong with an intern I gave them to. Mine from 10 years ago ditto - though I will say that those ‘broke in’ too much since I did not get full-lined so they crushed too much and are too short for show/hunt.
I got full lined 5 years ago and I love them. Love love love. Might be my last pair.
I still go ratcatcher in my mom’s original brown field boots which are also Dehners - they must be 40+ years old. Gorgeous sheen.
DItto hte CAREFUL measuring - even with teh Dehner rep my last 2 pairs came in wrong so had to be sent back. No biggie - they fix it for you.
Also, the HoCo sale rocks - you get paddock boots + a gift certificate so its double fun. Plus, IIRC, mine were around $600, with patent tops (removable) not 900. ??

Not to derail the OP, but, Hunter’s Rest, could you describe how your new patent tops are shaped/fitted, and how you get them to stay on your boots, please?

My newest pair has removable Patent tops. They snap on and slide over the top of the boots. They look like a snug fit so I have not tried to remove them. But if they ever make me master or staff (ha ha) I’ll be ready as I’ll be able to just order the brown tops.

I can’t compare my boots with any others - never had any others. Mine are over thirty years old, done a million lessons, hunted season after season, swam in the Fraser River several times a season, evented for years and are my every-day trail riding boots, rain or shine. They have the scars to prove we went through the blackberries, too.

I think they should go into the Dehner Hall of Fame. They are the fully lined dress boot.
I have spent $100.00 on them for new soles.

They are costly - but you are getting the best quality and custom made.

Yes, get custom boots.

Yes, get Dehners rather than Vogels if you will hunt or ride cross country in them. I think they hold up a bit better. No, don’t get zippers.

Yes, get them measured by an expert. The President of Dehner’s should be that guy, in theory. But, beautiful show-ring fit is sometimes achieved at the kinds of tack shops that cater to that crowd.

The person taking the measurements is as important as the bootmaker.

It sounds like your funky-shaped feet are in pretty good hands. With custom boots, you will never have to wish you were built differently. Your boots will conform to you and not the other way around.

Stopped at the Dehner factory in Omaha five years ago and ordered a pair of Three Buck Field Boots. Without a doubt they are the most comfortable riding boots I’ve ever owned. They regularly get bathed in East TN mud and still clean up really nice.

In this instance quality does not cost, it pays.

What do they say? Buy the best and you only cry once.
Between me and my wife, we have 6 pair of Dehners. After 10 years a pair of paddock boots will be retired soon (when the 7th pair arrives), but the others, which have seen lots of use, shows, hunts and workouts, are handsome, comfortable and going strong.

The patent tops I have, like PWings, are snap in, removable. They do make my boots fit a tad bit more snug (harder to pull on/off, but not too bad.) They look really sharp.
