We all do, but don’t discuss it in polite company.
I USED to have one, because Mr O’Pony’s face is somewhere between a pony and a cob, and I thought, “where’s the harm in this?”… then I ran into this guy I know, who only comes into town once a month to check his mail drop, and happened to mention it.
Once he was sure no one was listening, he told me this is a very dangerous practice, because the Illuminati have people inside most of the major tack wholesalers, whose sole job is to hide tiny audio recorders/transmitters in the buckles.
Since this is very expensive alien tech, they have a limited supply, which is randomly secreted in the buckles–basically, if you mix and match, you’re increasing the odds that you’ll get one of these devices, allowing the Illuminati to eavesdrop on everything you say at the barn. This practice also applies to other leather goods, including purses and belts.
Basically, the only way to keep yourself safe is to use beta/biothane, because they don’t have anyone in that industry yet-- although, according to my friend, it’s only a matter of time.

My frankenbridles have not been just for emergencies… they may or may not have even made an appearance at a show(s). My frankenbridling is so superb that no one seemed to notice.
Back in the days when the Powers brothers still owned the original Dover Saddlery, I used to wait for their January sale, when they’d have boxes of strap goods, including entire bridles and pieces thereof. I’d sit on the floor and go through them to find various crownpieces and cheekpieces of similar width, then piece together bridles to fit my Arabs, who fit neither full size or cob quite right.
The leather was exquisite. Still have some of them.
I miss those days.
Well this took a slightly weird turn but I guess it is COTH.
This thread was worthwhile for me. I ended up taking the chance and purchasing a bridle or well parts from Bridle2fit. I emailed with them about leather sourcing/quality and they were prompt to respond and helpful. For those curious, English leather cut in India. I was torn between Bridle2fit and Flexible Fit but in the end I didn’t like the flash connection of Flexible Fit and they wouldn’t let you order just parts.
All I needed and was able to order from Bridle2fit was the crownpiece, noseband and straps and cheek pieces. I already have a glitterotti browband so don’t want to be paying for something I don’t need as well as a throat latch that I’m borrowing from my Jerry’s double I had made. Might as well get some use out of it!!
Anyways for the history of this thread I was very impressed with the leather quality straight out of the box and all pieces put together and fit beautifully. Worlds above leather quality of the PS of Sweden I had and sold within 20 minutes of posting. So win-win paid for the majority of the new kit.
My bridle is Horse sized, but identifies as Cob.
Just leaving that there
