Some bridle makers will customize parts, though I cant remember which ones - its been a while since I shopped. But probably the easiest (and cheapest) thing to do if you have bridles is just to order a hew browband in bigger size.
If you have bridles already, can you mix and match? Flexible Fit will customise the size of each part, if you want new.
I got a cob bridle from Hinterland that fits the way you want, but it looks like they discontinued their dressage style bridle.
Bridle makers are finally starting to realize that horses head shapes and sizes vary a lot and are allowing for mix and match bridles! Is the crownpiece okay for your horse? Mine has a horse-sized crownpiece and browband, with cob-sized cheekkpieces and cavesson. Courtesy of Solo Equine.
It should be easy to find a browband that you can add to a cob bridle if the cob size is what fits him best. There are tons of places on the web that sell browbands.
It doesn’t all have to come out of the same plastic bag.
How do you tell if the crownpiece is the right length?
This issue is why I always buy bridles from Smith Worthington. They look beautiful (in my opinion) hold up, and they have parts! Very easy to make a bridle and not expensive.
I have three but they all happen to be different widths. Decathlon is the cheapest of the cheap, and Wellfleet makes an effort to be nice, so the width of leather shows.
We are playjng around with bits. Some of them have additional rings, so having them up at the highest hole would not work anymore.
A friend just got a bridle from Delfina, and custom matched parts to fit her new horse’s short but broad head. It is a really lovely bridle, and they appear to be having a sale just now.
The website has measurements and directions. Mine has a shaped crownpiece so the fit was important. Having had Morgans before, I was not surprised that his wedgy head required a “Frankenbridle”.
I got you. Thank you.
KL Select will mix and match parts.
I found a very nice HDR bridle from Stateline Tack in cob size that fit my warmblood perfectly.
It’s been a while back but I think they still carry it.
Crank noseband and no flash attachment.
The only thing I didnt like about it was that it came with web reins
I much prefer rubber reins but there is nothing to stop me from buying a set
The price was right too.
One of mine is in a mix and match PS of Sweden: oversize crown, horse browband, cob nose and cheeks.
I’m another with a mix and match. I have a cob crown, cheekpieces, and noseband, and horse browband size for my appendix’s fat head from Solo Equine. They have always been great to work with! And it came with leather reins! No crappy webbed reins or worse, heavy rubber.
HorsebyHorse.com is another that will let you select bridle parts for Bridle2Fit and Montar bridles. I ordered a Montar noseband from them when they were doing 20% off for Memorial day, so I suspect that they offer discount codes fairly regularly.
Thanks for all the responses. This has been helpful. I also agree on the web reins. I prefer leather or rubber also.
I had the same problem as you.
My horse needed a horse sized browband and short cheek pieces. The cheek pieces on his old bridle were so long that even on the shortest hole, the bit still hung too low.
The HDR bridle has held up well, and I’m not the most disciplined person in the world when it comes to cleaning tack.
I got the white inserts on the browband and noseband and though this bridle is several years old, they still look new and have not cracked.
It’s not Otto Schumacher, but it’s still good quality leather and there is no sign of wear or cracking, the stitching is still tight. and I still have all the little leather keepers still sewn down and I think that is a major thing in itself.
Email Bobby’s English Tack. They will have you measure different parts of your horse’s head and then will send you a custom-sized bridle at no additional charge. https://bobbystack.com/sizing?gclid=CjwKCAjwltH3BRB6EiwAhj0IUJ-w97FnsU6Xr8IvAqp9hnOgBgPlDIeZz8seMShYt1ZKHcYILo0O_hoC_NMQAvD_BwE
I’ve been following this with interest as I have a PSOS bridle that I’d love to replace. The leather quality is garbo in my opinion. The shaping is nice but the leather is plastic-y and I’ve had it well over 18 months.
Is there anything that compares to Jerry’s Harness leather quality? Bobby’s? I wish I had purchased a snaffle bridle from him before he closed up but it probably wouldn’t have fit my new mare anyway. You’ll have to pry the double that sits in my closet from my cold dead hands. I will use it on some horse at some point again.
