What are you wanting the horse to do?
Lucky Pulpit was a TB stallion in California. He didn’t breed as many mares as the well known Kentucky stallions so there are not as many get around. Not a sport horse type (you can google his photo.)

I’d look at the horse in front of you and decide if its conformation is suitable for what you want to do and if you like its temperament and movement.

They must have really wanted to make that pairing work… Mare was bred to him four times… For us eventers, we love seeing Bold Ruler + Princequillo linebred. In the sport world, that’s a good pairing.

The mare’s pedigree is spectacular for sport; Bertrando was a very nice sire of sport horses. I always wished he and Skywalker were on my side of the coast, I saw some spectacular horses by both - tall staying types with excellent build and charisma. Bertrando had plenty of jump influence; TV Lark and Hasty Road were, in their day, the stallions to look for in an event/jumping pedigree.

I wouldn’t say Lucky Pulpit isn’t a sport type. Despite his short career I have seen some nice horses from him, including California Chrome

It all depends on the mare, but I like Go Jaylo’s pedigree better. You get a nice double to Caro with these two horses, so that’s not necessarily a detractor to me. I always was fond of the Caro horses, I love Cozzene and think it was a shame that we (as in sport horse people) didn’t secure a son of his for sport. I’ve been very impressed with Mizzen Mast’s offspring that I’ve seen locally to me.

There aren’t really any concerns I see with this horse’s pedigree, but I’d assume they’d make a better eventer than anything else. Look at the horse in front of you.

for what it’s worth, my current horse (who I rode at the track in 2002) is by Bertrando. Can go all day. I was told in a clinic he should have a professional rider. He seems happy eating grass with me.

Well, he did get one excellent racehorse and some fair to middling ones, but I wouldn’t have chosen him to breed a Sporthorse. There are too many TBs that are a better type.

We agree that OP should consider what he/she wants to do with the horse and see if the conformation and temperament are suitable, as with any purchase.

A photo and some inkling of what discipline is being considered would be helpful. Sire and Dam alone are useless since, as we all know, the individual produced can vary greatly in conformation and temperament.

Useful, thanks. Is there a good place to see how many times a mare was bred to a stallion that is free?
