We just started our old basenji boy on this at the vet’s suggestions after a bout of pancreatitis. Does anyone have any experience with this product?
It’s SAMe, a S-Adenosylmethionine, usually used as a liver supplement. I haven’t used it for pancreatitis yet. But it is an amazing supplement when liver enzymes are elevated. Research shows it may be helpful (don’t know to what degree) in cases of Cushing’s, pancreatitis, diabetes, and some auto-immune disorders. I love the stuff.
We have one dog on it. He had presented with hepatitis and Pancreatitis a few years ago. Vet specialist told us to give it to him daily. i chose the chewables. it is easier to give, bc he eats them. i have to break them into 4’s, but it works fine. no side effects that i can think of.
Yes. Tried it to save the life of my most recently departed beloved dog. Has to be eaten on an empty stomach for best effect and it’s a large pill. He slowly lost patience with it until the end when he would have none of it. When he would take it, it reduced his leg tremors to nothing. The tremors were from his liver failing. Wonderful drug but expensive, very expensive, and if your dog is difficult to pill, like mine was, it’s a frustrating drug. The chewable is even more expensive, like 2x price, but finicky dogs, or dogs that don’t feel well–like a failing liver can cause, may not want to eat much of anything anyway. His last day on earth, he refused the drug that morning. Absolutely refused to take it, and it would have saved his life. Well–prolonged it anyway. To this day, the name of this drug makes me want to cry.
Great product. You can get it on Amazon too.
Thanks all for the responses. Right now we’re doing the capsule. He’s really good about it but if he needs to be on this longer term, we’ll switch to the chewable which is priced reasonably, IMO, at Allivet which is where I buy all my horse meds too. Dr.Beckett: if I understood correctly, my vet recommended this as the pancreatitis could impact the liver indirectly. I believe the pancreatitis was triggered by DH giving the kids a very large helping of drippings from a rotisserie chicken I made on our grill. Two days after that, the boy dog pretty much stopped eating and was not a happy boy. Between outrageously expensive canned food and turkey lunchmeat, his appetite is coming back. Sswor, so sorry for your loss.
I’m so sorry for your dogs problem. Any y idea why the drippings would cause pancreatitis?
The drippings were really fatty
I always have it on hand for my dog with liver issues; that said, giving it to him (without it being wrapped in cheese, which defeats the purpose) gets really difficult after day 2.
hope your pup feels better.
Update. The basenji boy was feeling better; until I had to go out of town for work, then he stopped eating again.
DH took him in to the vet where they kept him overnight and gave him IV fluids and antibiotics for some related infection. I just got the word that he’s eating again, so I pick him up tonight. The plan is to give him some really bland food, I’m thinking chicken and rice and gradually increase the amount. The challenge will be feed him separately from his sister!
Thanks for all the kind thoughts.
