Desert Dust

As a Midwestern kid, a horse crazy one, somehow I’d never heard this story.

 Opened this up thinking it was about the Saharan Dust Shield setting up in the Atlantic and drifting over the Caribbean and Florida where it impedes the development of major storms they were chatting up on this AMs weather forecasts.

More coffee needed.

I’m in Arizona and I figured it was a question asking how to properly seal your windows so the next haboob doesn’t blast desert dust into your home.

(I prefer the story about the horse)

Typical story of people fighting, people being greedy, and a horse being killed.

Reading it reminds me of the 1961 movie The Misfits with Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable (and a few other noteworthy actors of that era). I remember starting to watch it many years ago because of the stars, the scenery and the horses. And then when I realized what it was about-- the practice of “mustanging”-- I was sickened.

Good ol’ Desert Dust was an icon. And I love that hand-colored print. Look at the tips of his ears. They appear to have crumbled off due to frostbite.

How unfortunate that, like a lot of feral horses of his time, he met a terrible fate due to stupid humans.

That was a powerful movie.
The part of Nevada it was filmed in was used for nuclear tests.
I remember reading about how some cast & crew were later diagnosed with cancer linked to radiation.

Yeah, it wasn’t at all what I thought it was about. The characters were indeed “misfits.”

Very interesting about the location and its effects.
