Designing a monogram- How - Who Where?

A few years back I bit the bullet and got some show gear with my geldings name on, and of course had to retire him at the start of the next season.

My mare showed with his name on all ‘her’ stuff, until last year, when I decided to invest in new gear with her name on, yes of course I sold her at the end of the season…so now new horse is going to end up with a mismatch of stuff none of it with her name on…

NOT making that mistake again, I want to design something with my initials, DM, but have it more as a logo, or fancy monogram. I have all the artistic ability of a blind squirrel painting with its tail, so have been searching for online tools, without success.

I kind of have a vision of what it would look like, but just can’t find a way to capture it…any ideas.

I would first find the person or company who is going to embroider all your stuff, and work with them on it. For custom embroidery there’s usually a setup fee to digitize your design and store it, so you’ll probably want to get everything done at one place or you’ll be paying the fee multiple times.

I just did this.

I had a rough idea of what I wanted, but again, neither the artistic skill nor the techno expertise to do it myself. I looked into options on line, but the places that specialized in company/cooperate logos were all upwards of $500.
Etsy to the rescue!!

I found a lady on Etsy who did amazing work for me! I gave her a photo I wanted my logo to be based on, and three or four images/clip art from the internet that were kind of the style I was looking for.

Within 48 hrs, I had three proofs. I picked one, asked for a couple of other options, and she provided those markups within 24 hours. Within 4 days I had my perfect farm logo which she provided in pdf and jpgs. I will need to get it digitalized for embroidery machines, to get pads/coolers/etc monogrammed, but I’ve already had T shirts made, and am enjoying buying customized accessories (again, Etsy has some amazing options).

So the whole thing cost about 50 dollars and I’m beyond happy with the result. I’m attaching the inspiration picture and the final product for reference.

I guess I’m looking for a fancy monogram…lol, or maybe a logo…this is early thoughts, I need to try and find something close to give a person a clue what is in my head.

Knee has suddenly decided that life is good, it went from being so stiff and swollen, to a normal looking and reasonably useable thing in a week! It was amazing.

New mare is still a work work in progress, come on a long way, I’ve played with her a few times, doing a groundwork clinic on Saturday, starts our official start, hopefully riding her by months end…

My impression is that the places that do monogram embroidery also generate a standard kind of monogram. You just specify the letters. Now of course different vendors might have monograms that look slightly different.

There’s a fun free app that I use - Monogram It Lite. It will give you a general idea of some of your options.

Throwing this out there - a lot of places will monogram without having a specific, digitized logo. I have several older items with just my last initial in a font that I like: (this can be done inexpensively and quickly by almost anyone)

Last but not least is an actual logo. I got mine done by a friend launching a marketing business. She needed some examples, I needed a farm logo – but Etsy was my secondary go to if that had not fallen into my lap. I have a disgusting love for my logo because it’s exactly what I envisioned…

The markings are all stylized versions of a few very special paints in my life… and I can use either the whole logo or just the stylized heads depending on the project. Embroidery might be just the heads, t-shirts incorporate everything. The tattoo I’m getting of it next month is just the heads.

What exactly did you have in mind and does it have to be custom?

I had a logo done by a friend who is an amazing artist, in Ontario, for a new business I’m starting up. We brain stormed together, she came up with a bunch of different ideas, and we finalized together. I absolutely love it, love supporting a local artist and business, and have all the different apps(? sorry, not techy at all) but I can send the logo to get flyers and business cards done, etc. It is simple but very elegant and eye-catching (I think). Once I get going, I can get a jacket done, etc…
