Yeah, you do need to let it go. Enough with following JB around and starting these ridiculous pissing matches. You don’t come off well, and you’re contributing zero to the thread.

Second grade has not let out for the summer yet.
It’s so weird how you acknowledge that your behavior is extremely juvenile but you do nothing to change it.
And the braying continues.
Add equine nutrition to the likes of politics and religion under “topics not to discuss in polite company.”
Seriously, though, thank you, everyone for your thoughtful replies. I appreciate it. You’ve given me a lot to think about and I do feel like I’m well on the way to a good plan. Apologies for stoking the flames… we are all clearly passionate about our horses and their care

My grandfather bred thoroughbreds. He had no science degree. Neither did his father. Or his father. Amazing that generations of breeders and owners could feed their horses without “complete feeds”, nutritional degrees, and arrogance.
Feed companies have been employing a specific marketing strategy for years that says: You Can’t Feed Your Horse Without Us (implied: you aren’t as smart or as educated as we are). What feed companies are actually selling is convenience: scoop and serve. Not really any different from picking up your lunch at the drive-through window.
Yes, those old school TB breeders and trainers did things like only feeding a half ration on Sundays when the horses didn’t work, and when asked why, they’d say so the horse doesn’t tie up after training on Monday. But they do not understand what causes the horse to tie up. And some of them tied up despite only having a half ration on Sunday.

Keep us posted on how you make out! Like you, I’m also hesitant to feed soy. Nothing concrete, I know it works well for a lot of horses, and it’s the best choice for many. But given that there are alternatives, I make other choices for my crew. The bulk of their protein comes from alfalfa, which works very well for them. (And my vets agree!)
There’s nothing wrong with making a choice based on more than the science of it, as long as you don’t discard the science. There’s certainly nothing out there that says you HAVE to feed soy protein to have a healthy horse!
We removed a tangent of personal commentary/bickering to keep the thread on track. Let’s please stick to the substance of the topic vs. getting into personal digs.
Thanks,

Hmm…PB must have edited out the “no one here has equine nutrition training” comment before I came along, but…I happen to have an M.S. in animal science, and my research specifically was focused on equine nutrition and exercise physiology. So, yeah, some of us DO, in fact, have advanced training in equine nutrition.
Not that that stops other posters (speaking generally here - i.e. see the “alfalfa cubes” thread) from disagreeing with zero evidence to back up their claims, but…
ETA: OP, I really do think that you’ll make your life much more complicated than it needs to be with your plan. Balancing rations is actually quite complex. If you enjoy the work (like a lot of us here), then it’s worth it. But, for most horse owners, feeding the correct amount of a quality commercial grain is much simpler and often cheaper than trying to piece a diet together.
It’s still there - post #14, last paragraph

I had no idea! Or maybe I did know at some point and forgot I won’t forget this time I hope
Haha. Yep, I’m sure we’ve talked about it before. I try to chime in on most of the nutrition threads, but I know I miss a lot, especially during the semester when I’m drowning in grading and lecture prep. And half the time I arrive after you’ve already said what I was going to anyway…
